Roger Howard Schaffnit

Roger Howard Schaffnit of Smithville, passed away Friday night, December 28, 2018 at his residence. He was born December 27, 1954 to his parents, the late Vilas and Hazel Talcott Schaffnit. Roger was a Mason and member of Liberty Lodge #77/Center Hill Lodge and was a police officer. He is survived by his wife, Pamela Schaffnit of Smithville; 3 children, Cayla Mahaney (Chris) Hale, Krista Dawn Mahaney (James Mullican) and Michael Justin Maggart (Devin Lancaster); 12 grandchildren, Makenzie Ray, Caden Clark, Kailey Herron, Braxton Roller, Kinzi Foutch, Michael Ray Maggart, Addison Hale, Jacksten Sanders, Sylar Sanders, Carson Maggart, Pacey Maggart and Brayden Maggart; 1 sister, Cindy (Lou) Lara of California. The family has honored Roger’s request to be cremated and no services are planned. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Clamon Cantrell

January 2, 2019

86 year old Clamon Cantrell of Smithville passed away on Tuesday at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and a self employed electrician. The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Terry Little will officiate and burial will be in the Tittsworth Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Lula Fisher Cantrell and his wife, Faye Tittsworth Cantrell. Survivors include two daughters Gwen and Jay Stutts of Smithville and Beth and Jack Good of Lascassas. Four grandchildren, Matthew Agee of Smithville, Laura Good of Lascassas, Leslie Boyd, and Katie Stutts of Smithville. Great granddaughter, Graceson Boyd of Smithville. A sister Sharon Martin of Florida. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Donations may be made to the DCHS fishing team.




Clara Alma Billings

January 2, 2019

93 year old Clara Alma Billings of the Johnsons Chapel Community passed away Tuesday at NHC in Smithville. She was a member of the Johnsons Chapel Baptist Church and taught the children’s Sunday School class for more than 50 years. Visitation for Ms. Billings will be on Wednesday 4 to 7 and Thursday 10 until funeral services at 11 at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home.Bernard Houk will officiate and burial will follow at Billings Cemetery. She is preceeded in death by her parents Ray and Clara Felts Billings, 2 sisters Odean and Herman Prater and Ellen and Reed Hutchings, 2 brothers Ernest and Frances Billings and Melvin and Cecil Billings, Special Nephew Mike Billings and a Sister-in-law Hilda Billings. Ms. Billings is survived by two brothers, RV and Brenda Billings and Claude Billings both of DeKalb County and several nieces and nephews also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.




Christine Evelyn Matthews

Christine Evelyn Matthews age 73 of Smithville, passed away Sunday afternoon, December 30, 2018 at NHC HealthCare Center in Smithville. She was born September 5, 1945 to her parents, the late Edwin Lane and Evelyn Lattimore Wheeler. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Hayden; 2 brothers, Eudean Wheeler and Jackie Wayne Wheeler; 3 sisters, Helen Keith, Bobby Woods and Hazel Marie Wheeler. Christine was a member of Bethlehem Community Church and a retired factory worker. She leaves to cherish her memory, Debbie Nokes, Charlotte Parsley, Sherry Chandler, Darlene Grisham and Tonya (Shannon) Cantrell all of Smithville; 10 grandchildren, Tyler Durden, Jessica (Shannon) Anderson, Brandon (Kalah) Donnell, Noah Parsley, Amanda England, Dillan Matthews, Justin Grisham, Hannah Grisham, Kaylee Cantrell and Levi Cantrell; 10 great-grandchildren, Madison Durden, Mykenzie Wilson, Kayden Barron, Leah Anderson, Kyler Anderson, Carson Donnell, Collin Donnell, Braylon England, McKinlee Stout and Jackson Grisham; 4 sisters, Robbie Callis of Lebanon, Sue Wilkerson of Lebanon, Judy Johnson of Red Boiling Springs and Marlene Goodwin of Smithville; a host of nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be 5 PM Thursday evening, January 3, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Following the service the family will honor Christine’s request to be cremated and her cremains will be buried later. Visitation will be Thursday 12 Noon until the time of the service at 5 PM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Mrs. Birdie C. Kent

December 31, 2018

Mrs. Birdie C. Kent, age 89 of Alexandria, TN, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2018.

Mrs. Kent was born January 24, 1929 in the Maggart Community of Smith County, TN, a daughter of the late Champion Edward Vaden and Daisy Ann Grisham Vaden. She married Bethel M. Kent on August 4, 1944 and he preceded her in death on December 31, 1989. She worked as a store clerk for Kimberly’s in Lebanon for several years and later retired from Washington Manufacturing Company. Mrs. Kent was a member of the Order of the Easter Star Dekalb Chapter at Liberty #488. She was a member of the Brush Creek Missionary Baptist Church for 59 years.

Mrs. Kent is survived by Two Sons; Ronnie (Sarah) Kent of Smithville, TN, and Kevin (Lisa) Kent of Nashville, TN. Grandchildren; Mark (Heather) Kent, Julie Kent, Todd (Michelle) Kent, and Victoria Kent. Great-Grandchildren; Brandon Kent, Ava Kent, Hayes Kent, Elizabeth Miller, and Olivia Miller. Brother; Edward (Doris) Vaden of Tuckers Crossroads, TN. Sister; Lucille Napier of Brush Creek, TN.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Kent are scheduled to be conducted from the Gordonsville Chapel of Bass Funeral Homes on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 1PM with Bro. Chris Chambers officiating. Interment will follow in the Gordonsville Cemetery.

Visitation with the Kent family will be at the Gordonsville Chapel of Bass Funeral Homes on Wednesday from 4PM until 8PM and on Thursday after 11AM until service time at 1PM.

Robert Jackie Ervin

80 year old Robert Jackie Ervin of Smithville passed away Saturday at his residence. He was a Baptist and a retired woodworker. The funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bryan Jones will officiate and burial will be in the Bonham Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Houk Ervin; parents, Robert and Mary Young Ervin; brother, Billy Ervin; and daughter-in-law, Helen Ervin. Survivors include a daughter, Trena Murphy; three sons, Ricky Ervin, Randall Ervin, and Richard and Diane Ervin all of Smithville. Four grandchildren, J.D. Ervin of Smithville, Eric and Michelle Ervin of Smithville, Jeffery and Leigh Ann Whitefield of McMinnville, and Jason and Savannah Whitefield of Smithville. Seventeen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
