Taft Hendrixson, Jr.

76 year old Taft Hendrixson, Jr. of Smithville passed away Friday at NHC Smithville. He was a Mason, member of the Smithville First Assembly of God,  former owner of True Value Hardware and Sunshine Cleaners, and he was Mayor of Smithville from 2006 to 2012. The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Donnie Kelly will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-8 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m.  A Masonic service will be Sunday at 7 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Taft and Lucille Davis Hendrixson. Survivors include a daughter, Jill Marie Hendrixson-Goneke; two sons, Louis Taft Hendrixson, III, and Javon Ross Hendrixson; and two grandchildren, Brantley Grayson Goneke and Paris Monroe Girgsby all of Smithville. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In addition to flowers, donations may be made to the Smithville First Assembly of God Youth Group.




Ricke Thomas Smith

Ricke Thomas Smith age 65 of Smithville passed away Tuesday morning, December 10, 2019 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital. He was born December 8, 1954 in Hendricks, Minnesota to his parents, the late Raymond Earl and Ruth Hanson Smith. He was a Catholic and a carpenter. Ricke was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in Vietnam. He is survived by his wife, Patty Smith of Smithville; son, William (Toni) Roesman of Smithville; 2 grandchildren, Duane Bolden and Lillian Roseman; 1 brother, Leroy (Janice) Smith of California. The family has chosen a direct cremation. A Memorial Service will be 1 PM Monday, December 16, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with father John Patrick Day officiating and Military Honors conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 12 Noon until the time of the service at 1 PM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Carmella Chalfant

December 6, 2019

Carmella Chalfant age 47 of Dowelltown, passed away Wednesday morning, December 4, 2019 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital ER.  She was born October 23, 1972 in Smithville.  Carmella was a Homemaker and attended Buckner’s Chapel United Methodist Church.  She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Donny Chalfant of Dowelltown; son, Axyl (Sydney) Chalfant of Smithville; 2 grandsons, Tristan and Jaxson; mother, Annie Estell Ferrell and Wallace Cooper of Smithville; 1 brother, Delane (Kay) Lawson of Smithville.  The family has honored Carmella’s request to be cremated.  A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Phil Tollett officiating.  Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday 11:AM until the time of the service at 2 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the DeKalb County Foster Children.  DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.



Brenda Evelyn Johnson

December 5, 2019

Brenda Evelyn Johnson age 60 of Smithville, TN, died Thursday, December 05, 2019, at her residence. She was born June 23, 1959 in Smithville, TN and was a self-employed nursery worker. Ms. Johnson was preceded in death by father Gene Edward Judkins, mother Emma Bell Redmon Cantrell, brother James Judkins, daughter Amy Davenport Stanley, and grandson Jaythan Johnson.

Survivors include her children Christy (Joseph) Arnold, Jennifer Johnson (Thomas Davis), and Billy Johnson (Crystal Dillon), siblings Ricky (Shelia) Judkins, Jean Ann (Allan) Paris, and Rita (Patrick) Ray, fiancée Ronnie Walker, sister-in-law Carolyn Judkins, grandchildren Jasmine (Ryan) Kilgore, Duston Saylors, Yasmin Arnold, Lealon Arnold, Jaira, Jase, Alexis, Whitny, Dalton, and Bryson Johnson, and great granddaughter Olivia Kilgore.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M Saturday, December 07, 2019, in the McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Joseph Arnold will officiate. Interment will follow at Blues Hill Cemetery. The Family will receive friends Friday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and again Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at 2:00 P.M. at the parlors of McMinnville Funeral Home.

Glenda Staley

December 5, 2019

Glenda Staley age 73 of Smithville, passed away Wednesday morning, December 4, 2019 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital.  She was born August 19, 1946 in Guntersville, AL.  She was a retired factory worker and a Baptist.  Glenda was preceded in death her parents, Guynell and Jewel “Red” Mabe; husband, Danny Staley; brother, Eddie Mabe and sister, Carol Looney.  She is survived by 2 daughters, Tina Rowland and Lee Ann (Michael) Williams both of Smithville; grandchildren, Zachery (Kristen) Rowland, Hunter and Caleb Williams; 1 great-granddaughter, Kambree Elizabeth Rowland; aunt, Jo Ann (Rodney Wrenn of AL; uncles, Donald (Carolyn) Douglas of AL and Carlon (Jeanette) Mabe of Smithville; brother-in-law, Ronnie Staley of Smithville; sisters-in-law, Regina Cantrell of McMinnville and Beverly Studd of Bethpage; nephews, Don and Jimmy Crips; 2 great-nieces, Stormie and Chloe Crips.  Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, December 7, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in Bonham Cemetery.  Visitation will be Thursday 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m.  DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.  



Jerry Wayne Johnson

December 5, 2019

Jerry Wayne Johnson was born March 27, 1948, son of the late Donald and Sadie Herman Johnson and departed this life on Tuesday evening, Dec. 3, 2019 at the age of 71 years. He was preceded in death by infant twin siblings and an infant brother.

Jerry Wayne is survived by his wife of 49 years, Freda Duggin Johnson; 4 sons, Darrell Johnson (Inga) and Anthony Johnson (Natalie Gerald) both of Liberty, Donnie Johnson (Ronda) of Smithville, Derek Johnson (Kim Cantrell) of Liberty; 5 grandchildren, Kaitlyn King (Buster), Kimberly Johnson, Justin and Eli Johnson, Andrew Johnson; 7 step-grandchildren, Alex Hale (Phillip), Keshia Hale (Thomas), Gabby Robinson (Kyle), Noah Byford, Maegan and Peyton Harris, Carlie Sullivan; several step-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ann Ferrell of Woodbury, special cousins, Paul and Jean Neal of Liberty and several cousins.

Funeral services 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2019 at Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria with Bro. John Bell, Bro. Bobby Thomason and Bro. Wilson Williams officiating. Sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers, members of the Dekalb Co. Fire Dept. Visitation 10 a.m. till 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. till service time on Friday. Interment at Salem Cemetery in Liberty.

Jerry Wayne was a 1966 graduate of Dekalb CountyHigh School and a member of Covenant Baptist Church. He was a former pipe fitter at Perma-Pipe of Lebanon and served as a school board member with the Dekalb Co. Board of Education. Jerry Wayne served with the Liberty Station of the DeKalb Co. Fire Department for 44 years and has been station commander for many years. He was also an Honorary Lifetime Member of the DeKalb Co. Rescue Squad.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials for the family be given at the funeral home.
