WJLE’s “Jammin’ at the 428” to pay tribute to Ben Herman

WJLE’s “Jammin’ at the 428” will feature Steve Quick in a tribute to the late Ben Herman, who passed away almost five years ago.

The program will air  today (Friday) at 8:30 a.m. following the “Old Time Country Community Radio Show”.

Jim Hicks, the host of the show, will interview Quick, who will sing a couple of Ben’s songs and talk about his association with Herman. Ben started a radio show on WJLE during the 1980’s which continued until he passed the torch to Chris Tramel and Reed Vanderpool and they carry on the tradition still today as the “Old Time County Community Radio Show. Quick, who was often on the radio show with Herman , still makes appearances on the show now hosted by Tramel and Vanderpool.

“In a lot of ways the show today was a chance for us to thank Ben Herman for being a creative pioneer in radio. We had a great time visiting with Steve and we hope the listeners will enjoy the show,”said Hicks.

A couple jumped out the window of their home early this morning (Thursday) after waking to find it on fire.

Craig Asberry and his wife escaped unharmed but their home at 158 Prater Road, which belonged to Delane Taylor, was destroyed in the blaze.

Central dispatch received the call at 4:51 a.m. and members of the Four Seasons, Keltonburg, and Main Stations of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department responded.

According to County Fire Chief Donny Green, the Asberry’s had been sleeping but awoke to intense smoke in their bedroom and found the fire upon opening the door to the living room. In order to get out of the house, the Asberry’s had to break a bedroom window.

Chief Green said the fire apparently started from a cloth chair in the living room which was in front of a thermostat controlled electric wall heater. The heater caught the chair on fire and the blaze spread up the wall and into the attic. He said the fire was already fully involved by the time it was reported and the home could not be saved. No one was injured.

TN Ready testing will begin on April 15th for DeKalb County School District.

As always, district leaders encourage students to be present, on time, get adequate sleep, and perform at their very best. DeKalb County School Board Policy 4.700 reads that the DeKalb County School System will include students’ TN Ready scores in students’ final grades. TN Ready scores will account for 15% of students’ end-of-the-year grades.

“Test scores will be back before the next school year. If test scores are not back before the last day of this school year, parents will need to check their students Skyward accounts for final grades,” said Director of Schools Patrick Cripps.

Parents who do not have access to Skyward may call the DeKalb County Board of Education for information. Additionally, DeKalb County School Board Attendance Policy 6.200 reads that high school students who are absent the day of the scheduled TN Ready exams shall present a signed doctor’s excuse or have been given an excused release by the principal prior to testing to receive an excused absence. Students who have excused absences will be allowed to take a make-up exam. Excused students will receive an incomplete in the course until they have taken the TN Ready exam. Students who have an unexcused absence shall receive a failing grade on the TN Ready exam which shall be averaged into their final grade.

“All schools will offer many make-up-testing days for students if students are unable to attend due to extenuating circumstances. However, students should make every effort to be present at school,” Director Cripps continued.

“We appreciate all the hard work that teachers and students have put forth all year for the state assessments. Our students are exposed to many opportunities to shine, and we know that the TN Ready test is one opportunity of many,” Cripps said.
