Festival of Trees is set for December 6

The third Festival of Trees is set for December 6, 2021 at the DeKalb Community Complex sponsored by the Smithville Review.

“We are honored to be able to continue this tradition,” said General Manager Angie Meadows. “Josh Issac’s vision in 2018 took on life of its own. He set a meager goal of 21 trees that year and finished with over 40. We hope the community will continue to rally around this event.”

The festival will kick off on Monday, December 6, 2021 from 5-9. It is a free event, but you are asked to bring a new toy and place under the tree that you would like to win “Tree of the Year.”

We are looking for businesses, churches and organizations to be part of this wonder way of giving back and showing children that Christmas is about giving.

All toys will go to Lighthouse Christian Camp’s Outreach Program which serves more than 500 children.

“Our first Christmas party is for the girls on December 4, 2021, so this is perfect to replenish our toys for the next party on Dec. 11,” said Light House Christian’s Michael Kilgore.

“We are also trying to contact Santa to see if he can be on hand for free photos,” added Meadows. “Even though this is his busiest time of the year, I believe he can fly in for the event.”

The 2021 statewide muzzleloader/archery season for deer opens in Tennessee on Saturday, Nov. 6 and continues through Friday, Nov. 19 in all of Tennessee’s deer hunting units, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The opening of muzzleloader season in the state has a permanent opening date of the third Saturday before Thanksgiving.

For Unit CWD only, gun season will open on Nov. 6. Unit CWD, in the western portion of the state, is now comprised of 12 counties and was established after the confirmation of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in December 2018.

Muzzleloader firearms are defined as those firearms which are incapable of being loaded from the breech. Muzzleloading firearms of .36 caliber minimum, plus long bows, compound bows and crossbows are legal hunting equipment for this season. Hunters are also reminded that they must meet the blaze orange requirements while hunting.

The statewide bag limit for antlered bucks is two. No more than one antlered deer may be taken per day. Hunters are allowed the following antlerless bag limits: Unit L-3 per day, Unit A and B-2 total, and Unit C and D-1 total. In Unit CWD, there is a limit of three antlerless deer per day with no season limit and the statewide bag limit of two antlered deer.

For the exact boundaries of the different deer units, hunters can refer to the 2021-22 Tennessee Hunting and Trapping Guide, available online at https://www.eregulations.com/tennessee/hunting/, through the TWRA on the Go App, where hunting and fishing licenses are sold, and at all TWRA offices. In addition, regulations and other information for Unit CWD can be found at www.CWDinTN.com.

Muzzleloader hunters, ages 16 through 64 must possess in addition to other appropriate licenses, an annual big game license for the equipment used. Lifetime Sportsman license, Junior Hunt/Trap/Fish, Adult Sportsman license and Permanent Senior Citizens license holders are not required to purchase supplemental big game licenses.

In addition to private lands, including public hunting areas, several wildlife management areas (WMAs) will be open to hunters during this muzzleloader season. Hunters need to refer to the 2021-22 Hunting and Trapping Guide for a listing of these WMAs or go to TWRA’s website.

Tennessee’s gun season for deer opens in units A, B, C, D, and L on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This year’s date is Nov. 20. The season for gun/muzzleloader/archery will then continue through Jan. 2, 2022. Archery equipment is legal during muzzleloader and gun seasons. Muzzleloaders are legal during gun season.

A missed extra point by the Stone Memorial Panthers in overtime handed the DeKalb County Tigers a 21-20 victory Friday night in Crossville in the regular season finale.

The Tigers (6-4, 3-2) finished the season in third place in Class 4A Region 4 and will travel to Chattanooga to meet the East Hamilton Hurricanes in the first round of the state play-offs Friday, November 5 at 6 p.m. (Smithville Time). The Hurricanes (8-2, 5-1) are the second place team in Class 4A Region 3.

DeKalb County had the only score of the first half Friday night. It came on a 7 yard touchdown pass from Tiger quarterback Briz Trapp to Isaac Knowles with 1:12 left in the 1st period. Axel Aranda came on for the extra point and DC led 7-0.

Stone Memorial tied the game with 3:10 left in the 3rd period on a 1 yard touchdown run by Hunter Heavilon. Ethan Lynch added the PAT and the score was 7-7.

The Tigers took the lead again with 8:06 left in the 4th period on a 23 yard touchdown pass from Briz Trapp to Isaac Knowles. Axel Aranda booted the extra point and DeKalb County held a 14-7 advantage.

The Panthers tied the game again with 1:24 left in regulation. After a Tiger turnover, Stone Memorial capped a 43 yard drive with a 4 yard touchdown by Bryant Carter. Ethan Lynch tacked on the extra point and score was 14-14.

DeKalb County grabbed the lead in overtime on a 1 yard touchdown run by Colby Barnes. Axel Aranda’s PAT was good and the Tigers went up 21-14.

Stone Memorial then scored on a 7 yard touchdown run by Bryant Carter but the PAT attempt by Ethan Lynch was no good and DeKalb County prevailed 21-20.
