Debra Elaine Carter age 64 of Smithville, passed away Tuesday evening, July 2, 2019 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital in Smithville. She was born July 5, 1954 to her parents, the late William Everett and Jimmie Lou Montgomery Cantrell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Junior, Donald, Frank, Robert, Jerry and Harold Cantrell, Virginia Ruth Mise and Wanda Fay Johnson and father-in-law, R.J. Carter. She was a member of the Mt. Herman Baptist Church and a retired factory worker. She is survived by her husband, Ronald Jay Carter of Smithville; son, Ronald Joshua Carter of Smithville; Jayme Lynn (Nathan) Dowell of Smithville; grandchildren, Ryan Joshua Carter, Ethan Daniel Carter, Isaiah Dowell and Kylynn Dowell; siblings, Carlene (Ricky) Brown of Sparta, Diana (Jerome) Phifer of Texas, Barbara (Farrell) Henderson of Sparta and Melvin (Mary) Cantrell of Clinton; mother-in-law, Rubbie Carter of Smithville; sister-in-law, Lynn (Larry) Eaton of Smithville; special niece and nephew, Austin Cantrell and Rhonda Cantrell and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 1 PM Saturday, July 6, 2019 with Bros. Garry Caplinger and Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in Peeled Chestnut Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday 11 AM until 8 PM and Saturday 10 AM until the time of the service at 1 PM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Anna Molene Borden Whitaker

Anna Molene Borden Whitaker died early on June 30, 2019, in Smithville, TN. She was born in Clay County, TN, the youngest of the 10 children of Audie Hermas Borden and Ola Madelyn Mullinix Borden. She was named after two of Ola’s friends, one of them a midwife at her birth.
Anna met William Thomas Whitaker on the 4th of July, 1958 and they were married in October of that year, a marriage of nearly 44 years that ended with William’s death in 2002. She is survived by her daughter, Darcie Ann Whitaker Cripps (Kent) of Alexandria, TN, who lovingly and selflessly cared for her during the illnesses she endured in the last decade of her life. Her son, Christopher Thomas Whitaker (Cynthia) of Baltimore, also survives her. She was preceded in death by her son, William Douglas Whitaker who died in 2005. Her grandchildren Jen Whitaker (Scott Kaufman) of Ashburn, VA, William Whitaker (Sarah Shald) of Sioux Falls, SD, Kevin Cripps (Liz) and Tyler Cripps (Jessica) of Alexandria, TN. She had six great-grandchildren.
Anna was a reader all her life and she never left a library or Books-A-Million without a cherished armful of popular fiction. Finding a place to put books in her house was a constant battle and thousands were given away, donated, or loaned and forgotten over the years. She was known for her biscuits which were so good that many fine bakers were frustrated in their efforts to duplicate them, and for her sheath cake that made every family gathering complete. She was loved as a playmate and friend to her nieces and nephews, children of her older siblings. She was a Brownie and Scout leader and will be remembered as a young mother who played badminton, croquet, baseball in the yard of her home on Alta Loma Road in Goodlettsville, TN. After the children were grown Anna worked as an accounts clerk for several companies and retired from the Dollar General Corporate headquarters. Anna was raised, and raised her children in the Church of Christ.
Visitation will be at Cole & Garrett Funeral Home Goodlettsville Tuesday July 2 from 2-8 pm, and Wednesday July 3 from 12 Noon until service time at 2pm. Entombment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery Mausoleum.

Adcock Young. Edmonda passed away on June 30, 2019.

by her husband James Howard Stephens, daughter Carolyn

Harold Young, and Oscar (JR) Young.

FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, July 3, 2019 in the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home in Sparta with burial in the Indian Mound Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 pm until 8 pm on Tuesday evening.

William “Bill” Patrick age 84 of Smithville passed away Friday morning, June 28, 2019 at his residence. He was born March 25, 1935 in Athens, AL. Mr. Bill was a sewing machine mechanic, affiliated with New Life United Pentecostal Church and a U.S. Army Veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, Posie Flanagan and Pauline Patrick; daughter, Sabra (Noel) Redmon; son, John Rice; grandson, Stephen Patrick. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Patrick of Smithville; 5 children, Angela Jarvis of Smithville, Teresa Patrick of McMinnville, Jerome (Rhonda) Patrick of Silver Point, Loretta Elkins of Smithville and Christina Jones of McMinnville; step-daughter, Sandra Jones of McMinnville; 16 grandchildren; 1 brother, Ray Flanagan. Funeral services will be conducted 2 PM Monday, July 1, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Dwayne Cornelius officiating and burial will follow in Taylor Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard. Emilio Hernandez Cruz age 52 of Smithville went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday night, June 26, 2019 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis. He was born April 3, 1967 in Tuxtla, Mexico. He was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Eliud Hernandez Cruz. He worked in landscaping. Emilio had been ministering the gospel since the age of 16 and had ministered in Smithville for the last 17 years most recently pastoring at La Hermosa United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Maria Hernandez of Smithville; 5 children, Esther, Claudet, Liliana, Ricardo and Antonio Hernandez; 3 grandchildren, Alejandra, Aaron and Angelique. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Sunday, June 30 at the Smithville First Baptist Church, Life Enrichment Center with Pastor Felipe Barrios officiating. Visitation will be from 2-4 at The Life Enrichment Center. Burial will be in DeKalb Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements

Jerry L. “Buckwheat’ Johnson age 70 of Smithville, passed away Thursday June 27, 2019 at St. Thomas Midtown Hospital in Nashville. He was born March 18, 1949 to his parents, the late Wilson B. and Emma Lee Taylor Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Jessica Hobbs; grandson, Caylix Johnson; brother, Ray Johnson and sister, Dorothy Haggard. He owned and operated Model City Auto Sales and was in the trucking business. Buckwheat is survived by 1 son, Chad Johnson of Smithville; 7 grandchildren, Bentley Hobbs, Brantley Johnson, Carmen Johnson, Aspen Johnson, Emma Johnson, Makira Johnson and Kelvin Reagan; son-in-law, Josh Hobbs; 2 sisters, Kathleen Mahler and Era Billings both of Sparta; former wife and mother of his children, Judy Johnson of Smithville. Funeral services will be conducted 2:PM Sunday, June 30, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday 2 PM until 8 PM and Sunday 10 AM until the time of the service at 2 PM.
