Bobby L. Cripps

Bobby L. Cripps, age 84, of Smithville passed away on Monday, October 21, 2019 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital. Mr. Cripps was a carpenter and a farmer and a member of Whorton Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife: JoAnn Cripps; parents: Roy and Cora Cripps; Sons: Stevie Cripps and Mark Cripps; Daughters: Nancy Cripps and Bobbie Jo Cripps, Brothers: Hoyte Cripps and RL Cripps; Sisters: Nettie Foster, Maireen Garvey, Dorothy Mensuittie, JoAnn Rhody and Judy Hale. Survivors include sons: David and Sheryl Cripps of Smithville, and Gary and Kenderly Cripps of Smithville; Grandchildren: Chala and Caleb McDonald of Texas, Corey and Kami Cripps of Smithville, Brett Cripps of Columbia, Chloe and Justin Winchester of Smithville, and Sophie Cripps of Smithville; great-grandchild: Blakelyn Cripps of Smithville; Brother: Ray Cripps of Smithville; Sisters: Faye West of Smithville, and Wanda and Orville Hendrix of Smithville; Brothers-in-law: Bob and Peggy Motley of Nashville, and Joyce and Dawn Gilliland of White House; several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. The family has chosen cremation. A memorial service will be Saturday October 26 at 11:00 am at Whorton Springs Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Whorton Springs Baptist Church building fund. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.




Laura Lena Rhody

October 21, 2019

Laura Lena Rhody, age 97, of Smithville, TN passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2019. She was born on September 2, 1922 to her parents the late J.W. Robinson and Shellie Cooper Robinson. Lena was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Great-Great Grandmother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt and friend to many. Throughout her life she set the example of ‘give more than you take’. She had a full life including teaching school, working with Head Start, working with the TN Department of Human Services and working at the ASCS Farm Service Agency. She was an excellent seamstress and an avid high school band supporter. Lena was a member of the Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church in Smithville, TN. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Austin Rhody, a daughter Linda Rhody Henson, two brothers, Truitt Robinson and Stephen Edward Robinson, two sisters Melodia Mathis and Jessie Lee Vanatta, seven brothers-in-law, Buford Vanatta, Walter Carter, Elzie McBride, Earnest Mathis, Bob Rhody, Woodrow Rhody, Sheal Allen Rhody and 4 sisters-in-law Mary Rhody Snow, Eva Hill, Nonnie Cantrell and Jennie Cantrell. She is survived by son Austin and wife Nancy Rhody of Rockwood, TN; son Jim and wife Betty Rhody of Sevierville, TN; son Randy and wife Annette Rhody of Smithville, TN; grandson Kevin and wife Lori Rhody of Kingston, TN; grandson Justin and Cindy Rhody of Rockwood, TN; grandson Kirk Henson of Knoxville, TN; granddaughter Regina Brantley and husband Chris of Rockwood, TN; granddaughter Shelley and husband Marc Daley of Pittsburg, PA; granddaughter Meghan and husband Adam Keck of Knoxville, TN; and granddaughter Sarena and husband Lawrence Montgomery of Knoxville, TN. Lena is also survived by five great grandchildren Josh, Demi, Malory, Sydney and Knox and five great-great grandchildren Aubree, Taylor, Emberly, Alaric and Easton. A brother, Robert and Roberta Robinson of Liberty. Sisters, Bertha McBride and Lavelle and Willie Turner. Sister-in-law, Margie Robinson and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 and on Wednesday, October 23rd from 11:00 am until the time of the service at 1:00 pm at Love Cantrell Funeral Home. Interment will follow the funeral service at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Love Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.




Leonard White Davis

October 21, 2019

Leonard White Davis, 77, passed away Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019 at Skyline Medical Center. He was a native of Cannon Co., and lived in Smithville.

He is survived by his wife, Mina Lou Reeves Davis of Smithville; sister, Teresa Davis (Ellis) Brandon of Readyville; daughters, Scarlett Davis of Murfreesboro, Kelly McConnell and Denise Hollis both of Lebanon and Janet White of Alexandria; grandchildren, Cheyenne Bennett, Devlin Mullins, Jody Brummett and Katie Melton; great grandchildren, Savannah Burns and Jasmine Melton. 7 step grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ewin and Jimmie Mullinax Davis; brothers, Daniel Lee Davis and Van Boris Davis.

Known as the Mayor of Hidden Harbor Marina, Mr. Davis was a member of the Church of Christ. He was a welder at Cummings Signs and MTSU where he retired. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, water skiing, his family and keeping up with his friends on Facebook.

Funeral Services will be 12 noon Thursday, October 24, 2019 in the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be from 4 pm to 8 pm Wednesday, October 23, 2019. After his services, Leonard’s wishes were to be cremated.

Patsy Ann Clark

Patsy Ann Clark age 70, passed away Saturday night  October 19, 2019 at her residence in Smithville. Patsy was born December 25, 1948 to her parents the late Jake and Ovie Reynolds Herman. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Alan Clark; step-daughter, Vickey Lynn Clark; and her sister, Shirley Caldwell. Mrs. Clark was a member of Dowelltown United Methodist Church and was a factory worker.  She is survived by her husband, William Harvey Clark; step-sons, David Earl Clark and Billy Ray Clark both of Smithville; grandchildren, Dakota (Eric) Adcock,  Leah Payton Clark, and Morgan S. Clark; great-grandchildren, Lyren L. Clark, and Arya Adcock; several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. The family has honored Mrs. Patsy’s request to be cremated and an Memorial Service will be announced at a later date. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.




Robert Thomas Applegate

Robert Thomas Applegate, age 80 of Aberdeen, Ohio, died Friday, October 18, 2019 at the Hospice of Hope Care Center at Kenton Pointe in Maysville, Kentucky.  He worked in the grocery business for fifty-two years and worked for many area grocery stores including the former Clyde’s Super Value.  He was also a member of the Sedden United Methodist Church in Maysville, Kentucky, a member of the Masonic Lodge 535 in Rome, Ohio, a member of the Scottish Rite of Columbus, Ohio, a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 29 and he was a Shriner.  Mr. Applegate was born January 24, 1939 in Portsmouth, Ohio the son of the late Glenn and Ara (Vaughters) Applegate.  He was also preceded in death by one daughter – Karen Sue Rigsby; one brother – Joe Applegate and a son-in-law – Roger Gifford.

Mr. Applegate is survived by his loving wife of sixty-two years – Phyllis (Wheeler) Applegate; two daughters – Beverly Gifford of Ripley, Ohio and Sandra Pumpelly of Aberdeen, Ohio; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one brother Michael Applegate (Kathleen).

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Monday, October 21, 2019 at Cahall Funeral Home in Ripley, Ohio.  Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at Harrison-Pyles Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, Ohio with the funeral service at 1:00 P.M.  Interment will follow the funeral service in Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg, Ohio.




Willie Ray Matthews

Willie Ray Matthews age 65, passed away at his residence in Rock Island, Thursday October 17, 2019. He was born December 22, 1953 to his parents the late Willian Junior and Betty Davis Matthews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Martha Matthews, Patricia Shoemake, Jena Hesson, Helen Ervin, and Brenda Taylor; brothers, Terry Murphy, William Matthews. He worked as a nurseryman. He is survived by his son, Brent (Rhonda) Matthews of Woodbury; grandchildren,  Madison and Hunter Matthews; sisters, Pamela Cain, and Kathy Murphy; brothers, Randall Neal, Roy Matthews, James Matthews, and Doug Murphy; several Aunts, Uncles, and cousins also survive; caregivers, Steve Quick, Henry “Bubby” Ratleph, Teresa Parker, and Rick Sweeny. Funeral services will be Monday October 21, 2019 at 1:PM with Bro. Bobby Thomason officiating at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with burial to follow in DeKalb Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday 1:PM until 8:PM and on Monday 10:AM until the time of the service at 1:PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family ask donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with the funeral expenses. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
