Lightning from a passing thunderstorm struck the home of Ralph and Lisa Agee at 1001 New Hope Road, Alexandria early this morning (Saturday) causing a small fire.

County Fire Chief Donny Green said the Agee’s were at home asleep when they were awakened around 2:40 a.m. by the loud boom and looked outside to see sparks coming from the home. They also heard popping sounds coming from within the walls. The Agee’s alerted 911 and firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, Chief Green said firefighters saw fire coming from the eave of the home where the lightning bolt struck. A saw was used to cut an opening to better gain access to the eave to extinguish the fire. The blaze was quickly snuffed out without any further damage to the home. No one was injured.

Members of the Liberty, Temperance Hall, and Main Stations of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department responded along with automatic mutual aid support from the Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department. DeKalb EMS and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department were also on the scene.
