DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, April 22

The DeKalb Prevention Coalition encourages DeKalb County residents to take part in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Saturday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The public will be provided the opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. (Sites cannot accept liquids, needles or sharp instruments, only pills or patches.) The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

DeKalb Prevention Coalition will have two locations this year: Smithville City Hall at 104 East Main Street and the Alexandria City Hall at 102 High Street

A convicted felon and his female passenger were taken into custody Monday, April 10 after leading sheriff’s department deputies on a pursuit from DeKalb County into two other counties before being forced off the road into a ditch.

Among the charges against the driver, 39-year-old Warren Brandon Glasby of Poss Street, Smithville, is aggravated assault on a first responder (2 counts) for pointing a firearm out the window of the Mustang he was driving while trying to make his getaway from two deputies in pursuit. No one was injured.

Glasby is also charged with evidence tampering, resisting arrest, driving on a revoked license, reckless endangerment, evading arrest by a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony, possession of a schedule II drug (Cocaine), and possession of methamphetamine with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver. His bond totals $225,000. He will make a court appearance on May 16.

The passenger with Glasby, 29-year-old Katelyn Luann Goodwin of Allens Ferry Road, Smithville is charged with reckless endangerment and aggravated assault on a first responder (2 counts). Her bond is $32,500 and she will be in court April 27.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on Monday April 10 a deputy was patrolling Woodbury Highway when he spotted a red Ford Mustang failing to maintain its lane of travel. He said the Mustang almost hit another vehicle. The officer turned around and caught up with the Mustang at the intersection of Woodbury Highway and Nashville Highway, but when he turned on his emergency equipment, the driver of the Mustang, Glasby fled into Cannon, Wilson, and then back into Cannon County.

During the pursuit, Sheriff Ray said Goodwin threw objects out of the passenger side door including a large cooler apparently trying to slow the deputy and another officer which had joined the chase. According to Sheriff Ray, Goodwin also handed Glasby a firearm which he pointed at the officers from the driver side window of the Mustang before throwing it to the ground during the pursuit. Goodwin also handed Glasby other objects during the chase which he threw out of the car window placing the pursuing deputies in imminent danger. Those objects were later recovered including numerous baggies, clothing and the firearm.

As the pursuit continued, Sheriff Ray instructed the officers to force Glasby off the road due to the increasing risk to the public as Glasby had posed a danger to other vehicles and a pedestrian along the way.

After the Mustang was forced off the roadway into a ditch, Glasby got out of the car through the driver side window and fled on foot through a creek and into a field before he was taken forcibly to the ground and handcuffed by officers. Goodwin remained at the car and was also taken into custody.

During a search, deputies found inside Glasby’s front pocket a grocery bag which contained 1.95 ounces of a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine and 10 grams of a white powdery substance thought to be cocaine. A background check through central dispatch revealed that Glasby’s driver license was revoked.

42-year-old Christopher Eudean Pack of Big Rock Road, Smithville is charged with public intoxication. His bond is $2,500 and he will be in court April 27.

Sheriff Ray said that on April 13 a deputy was summoned to the area of Nashville Highway and East Main Street in Liberty where a man was spotted having fallen asleep in the back of a truck. Upon arrival the officer confronted the man, Pack who was determined to be unsteady on his feet and his eyes were bloodshot. Pack was unable to focus on the sobriety tasks he was asked to perform. He was then placed under arrest.

33-year-old Linda Sue Bennett of West Main Street, Smithville and 32-year-old James DeAllen Caplinger of West Broad Street, Smithville are charged with vandalism and aggravated criminal trespassing. Bond for each is $6,500 and they will be in court April 27.

Sheriff Ray said that on April 6 Bennett and Caplinger entered the property of their victim at 517 Hog Foot Road, Liberty without consent and broke several glass windows of the residence and a car. No trespassing signs were posted on the property at the time. The estimated damage was $4,178. The case was investigated by a sheriff’s department detective.

Several people joined members of the Savage-Goodner Camp 1513 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans Thursday evening for the dedication of a memorial to Confederate Veterans interred at Mt. Holly Cemetery on Allens Ferry Road near Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church.

About 40 people were in attendance.

The event was held in conjunction with Confederate History month in Tennessee. During that month in 1862, the Battle of Shiloh was fought in West Tennessee. With this bloody battle came the realization the War Between the States would bring unprecedented human suffering. The War also ended in April with the surrender of General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia in 1865. To recognize Confederate History Month and local Confederate Veterans, the Savage-Goodner Camp 1513 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans dedicated a memorial to Confederate Veterans interred at Mt. Holly Cemetery,. A brief ceremony at the cemetery was held with military and civilian reenactors along with the unveiling of a memorial sign containing the names of the Confederate Veterans buried in Mt. Holly Cemetery.
