It’s Time to Pack a Shoebox for “Operation Christmas Child” (VIEW VIDEO HERE)

November 9, 2018

DeKalb County residents will have the opportunity to donate Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes, beginning Monday, November 12.

Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse is the world’s largest Christmas project that collects and distributes gift-filled shoeboxes for needy children around the world.

Since 1993, the project has delivered gift-filled shoeboxes to more than 146 million children in more than 160 countries and territories. This year’s goal is to send gifts to 12 million children worldwide. Also, to help offset shipping costs, participants are asked to donate $9 per shoebox gift. They will receive a tracking label, enabling them to learn the destination of their shoebox gift.

The week of November 12th through 16th, is National Collection Week for Operation Christmas Child. The drop-off/relay center for this area is located at the Indian Creek Baptist Church, 967 Hurricane Ridge Road, Smithville, Tennessee, and is a convenient place for churches, clubs, schools, businesses, and individuals to bring their filled shoe boxes.

The local drop off center will be open, as follows:

*Monday, November 12 through Friday, November 16 – 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
* Saturday, November 17 – 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
*Sunday, November 18 – 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
*Monday, November 19 – 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

You may select from the above dates and hours to deliver your filled shoe boxes to the center.
This holiday season you can experience the true meaning of Christmas with a child in need by simply packing your shoeboxes with toys, hygiene items, school supplies, and other small gifts.

Cold Weather Forces Relocation of 3rd Annual Turkey Trot to County Complex Saturday

November 9, 2018
By: Dwayne Page

Due to the cold weather, the DeKalb County Coordinated School Health will be holding the 3rd Annual Turkey Trot Walkathon on Saturday, November 10 at the county complex instead of at Green Brook Park. The event will benefit The Back Pack Program.

Approximately 6% of the DeKalb County student population goes hungry on a regular basis, with meals provided at school being their main source of food. Coordinated School Health (CSH) began sending bags of food home with children over 9 years ago. Initially the food was sent home over long weekends and holidays. Now the students are provided food to take home every week during the school year. The Back Pack Program has been sustained through generous donations of time, money, and food from individuals, churches, civic organizations, and grants. Funding is not always consistent, and donations are continuously sought for food and/or money to maintain our program.

This walkathon hopes to encourage the community to enjoy some physical activity and fun while also supporting a great program. All ages are welcome. There are nine age categories and prizes will be given to a male and female in each age category that walks/runs the most laps. They will have games, food, crafts, face painting, and new this year a costume contest! Registration starts at 10:00am. Costume contest judging will be from 10:00am to 10:45am, the winner will be announced before the start of the walkathon. The walkathon will start at 11:00am and end at 12:30 pm, with prizes to follow. There is no fee to participate, but participants are asked to bring non-perishable food items for a donation to The Back Pack Program.
