Tennessee’s 2022 Turkey Season Set to Open

Tennessee’s 2022 spring turkey hunting season is set to open in most areas of the state on Saturday, April 2.

In an effort to help the turkey population in specific areas, the season starts April 16 in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) unit (consisting of Dyer, Lake, Lauderdale, Shelby, and Tipton counties) and in Giles, Lawrence, Lincoln, and Wayne counties in Middle Tennessee. The Young Sportsman Hunt is April 9-10 in these counties. The season concludes May 15 in all areas of the state.

“The purpose of the delay opening in the MAV unit and select Middle Tennessee counties is to give birds a chance to breed without disturbance,” said Roger Shields, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s Wild Turkey Program Coordinator. “Hopefully this will lead to better reproduction and help increase the population in these areas of concern.”

This will be the third spring turkey season to “Tag Before You Drag” where hunters tag their big game animal in the field prior to moving. Hunters are able to use the TWRA on the Go app to simply E-tag and report their harvest in the field in one easy step, with or without cell phone service, prior to moving.

If you do not have a phone, attach one of the temporary transportations tags that printed at the bottom of your license this year and you have until midnight on the same day of the harvest (or before leaving the state) to check in your harvest online at GoOutdoorsTennessee.com or at one of several manned check stations. Temporary transportation tags can also be obtained by logging in at GoOutdoorsTennessee.com.

One bearded turkey is allowed per day, not to exceed the spring season limit of three bearded turkeys (two birds in the MAV unit).

A hunting and fishing combination (Type 001), plus a supplemental big game license, or a sportsman license is required. To purchase a license online, go to https://www.gooutdoorstennessee.com/.

Hunting hours are 30 minutes prior to legal sunrise until legal sunset (times found based on your location in the TWRA On the Go app). Legal hunting equipment includes shotguns using ammunition loaded with No. 4 shot or smaller, longbows, recurve bows, compound bows, and crossbows.

Firearms and archery equipment may have sighting devices, except those devices utilizing an artificial light capable of locating wildlife.

The 615 Preps Helmet Madness III championship comes down to DeKalb County High School and Green Hill for the 2022 title. Fan voting is live through noon today (Tuesday, March 29) to determine the champion.

The winner will earn bragging rights for “favorite football helmet” in the 615 Preps coverage area.

The Tigers are in the final for the second time in three years, finishing runner-up in 2020 to Mt. Juliet, while Green Hill makes the championship round for the first time. The Hawks could bring the title back to Wilson County for the third straight year with a win.

The winner will host one of the 615 Preps Spotlight Games this fall.

615 Preps began in 2019 as Midstate Preps Plus, a website to help enhance coverage of high school football in Middle Tennessee. The name was changed in March of 2020 to provide a more recognizable brand and to align with the 615 Preps Podcast.

In keeping with its annual tradition of letting fans vote for their favorite helmets in the 615 Preps coverage area, the third edition of Helmet Madness began earlier this month with opening-round matchups. This year’s bracket featured a record 77 teams out of the 87 area teams participating.

Voting will run through noon Central on today (Tuesday, March 29. Fans may vote once per hour. For the remaining rounds, if a tiebreaker is necessary, an additional vote will be on Twitter @615Preps to determine the winner.

The County Commission Monday night adopted a resolution designating DeKalb County as a “Broadband Ready Community”.

The resolution provides a streamlined policy for reviewing applications and issuing permits related to broadband service projects. The resolution creates a process that will allow the county to be poised for broadband access in the future and makes the county eligible for future grant and federal funding to expand the area’s internet infrastructure.

In other business, the commission voted 11-1 to adopt a resolution appropriating $750,000 of the county’s $3.9 million share of federal American Rescue Plan Act funding to help support completion of DTC’s fiber infrastructure build. Seventh district commissioner Bruce Malone voted against it. The resolution makes official the action taken by the county commission in December to allocate the funds for this purpose.

Meanwhile an agenda item was postponed to consider and act on replacement of playground equipment at seven community centers using American Rescue Plan Act funds. The vote was 11-1. Fifth district commissioner Jerry Adcock voted against postponement.

The commission also voted to give approval for revenue from county surplus items sold at the sheriff’s auction to be returned back to the department and into the line item as per the department head’s wishes.
