DCHS Tigers to Host Watertown Tonight (Listen to WJLE’s Tiger Talk Program Here)

The Watertown Purple Tigers are coming to town tonight (Friday) to take on the DeKalb County Tigers.

Kick-off will be at 7 p.m. at DCHS and WJLE will have LIVE coverage.

DeKalb County (2-1) lost its first game of the season last Thursday to the Macon County Tigers in Smithville 21 to 13 while Watertown (1-2) lost to Westmoreland 20-0. The purple Tigers defeated Gordonsville 28 to 13 in the season opener and their other loss was to Fayetteville 36 to 12.

Tiger Coach Steve Trapp said while the Tigers were able to overcome mistakes in the first two games of the season miscues perhaps cost them a win over Macon County.

“Last Thursday it finally caught up with us. We just made too many mistakes to be victorious, so we have to keep an emphasis on practicing tackling. Its not that our guys don’t hit hard and are not physical, it comes down to understanding leverage and defensive fits. We have done a great job with that, but we just got out of sorts a couple of times. I told them this will be a game in which one or two plays will make a difference. We had moments when we just were not as clean as we should have been as far as execution and by the end of the night it finally caught up with us,” said Coach Trapp.

The Tigers will be trying the rebound tonight without the services of starting Junior quarterback Briz Trapp who left the game in the 3rd period last week with a shoulder injury. Backup quarterback Sophomore Jordan Parker will get the start against the Purple Tigers. Coach Steve Trapp said he has confidence in Parker,

“He is a hard worker and a gritty kid and I really like that and when I use the term gritty it just means I like the way he goes about his business. He is a tough guy and his teammates really respond to him and rally around him. He understands the significance of being the starting quarterback and what I expect him to do which is simply making sure we do things right. It’s the same expectation we have for every player on the field. He has worked extremely hard this week and he is ready to go,” said Coach Trapp.

As for Watertown tonight, “They are a good team especially defensively. They have always been solid and coached well there. They fit things and line up correctly and fly to the football. Things that a defense is supposed to do. Offensively this year they are a little bit different in some things they are doing but you can see they are getting better each and every week on the offensive side of the ball. I told our guys this week that if you could take away two plays on offense and two plays on defense last week the outcome would have been different. The lesson from that is every play is valuable and you have to execute at your best. For the most part they did a good job with that, but we just need to eliminate those moments when we are just not clean,” said Coach Trapp.

“Coach to Coach” is followed by “Murphy’s Matchups at 6:00 p.m., a look at Tennessee High School Football from Murphy Fair with commentary on games and coaches interviews.

“Tiger Talk” airs at 6:30 p.m. with the Voice of the Tigers John Pryor interviewing Coach Steve Trapp and Tiger football players Johnny Skinner, Jordan Parker, and Malachi Trapp.

Weather Permitting, the DeKalb Soil Conservation District invites friends and family to a Memorial Tree Planting in memory of Ms. Anita Houk. This will be held Wednesday, September 14th, at 8:30 a.m. It will take place in Green Brook Park across from the Duck & Goose Food Dispenser.

Anita was a retired secretary with the DeKalb Soil Conservation District office having worked there for 17 years. She passed away on July 5
