New Smithville Alderman to be named Monday Night

The successor to former Smithville Alderman Gayla Hendrix is to be named Monday night, October 5.

The Mayor and Aldermen will meet in regular monthly session at 6 p.m. at city hall and Mayor Josh Miller is expected to recommend an appointment to fill the vacancy with the approval of the aldermen. Hendrix resigned as alderman last month after Mayor Miller appointed her to the Smithville Municipal Court Judgeship. Whoever gets the appointment will serve out the remaining two years of Hendrix’s unexpired term.

In other business, the aldermen will act on first reading on an annexation ordinance for properties at Foster/Miller Road and Highway 70/Colvert’s Lake Road.

The board will be asked to approve the hiring of a new full time fire department employee and to adopt a bond resolution for the Tennessee Department of Transportation Paving Grant.

Students at DeKalb County High School have been celebrating Homecoming with Spirit Week activities and it will conclude Friday with a parade and a football game as the Tigers host the Livingston Academy Wildcats.

The presentation of the Homecoming queen and attendants will be at 6:30 pm. Kick-off is at 7:00 p.m. and WJLE will have LIVE coverage of the game with the Voice of the Tigers John Pryor and Luke Willoughby. All the allotted tickets for the game have sold out.

Meanwhile the DCHS Homecoming Day Parade will depart from the high school Friday at 12:45 p.m. and make its way down Broad Street to South Congress Boulevard over to Smithville Elementary School. The parade will then come back onto Congress Boulevard to Northside Elementary School before motoring back down Congress Boulevard and turning onto Don Cantrell Street beside City Hall and entering the public square. The parade will end in a pep rally and the announcement of the winning entries.

Calling all Tiger fans to show that Tiger Pride! The Class of 2024 will have a photo booth set up with their very own Tiger mascot in costume directly after the homecoming parade Friday, October 2. They encourage everyone to stop by and capture some memories by taking a picture or two with classmates, teammates, family and friends! No charge, just come out and celebrate the Tigers with them! DeKalb County, 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the region, needs a victory to keep their regular season region title hopes alive. The Wildcats are coming off a 35-0 win against Smith County last week while the Tigers stepped outside the region beating Cannon County at Woodbury 49-7. Livingston Academy is 5-1 overall and 2-0 in region play.

The Class 4A Region 3 standings and team records are as follows:
Livingston Academy: 5-1 (2-0)
DeKalb County: 3-3 (1-0)
Macon County: 5-1 (1-0)
Cumberland County: 0-6 (0-2)
Stone Memorial: 2-4 (0-2)

The Tigers’ wins this season have been over Stone Memorial 31-30, Grundy County 32-0, and Cannon County 49-7. Their loses have been to Warren County 30-24, Upperman 27-21, and Watertown 21-14.
Livingston Academy has beaten Westmoreland 12-10, Cumberland County 7-0, Upperman 21-14, Stone Memorial 28-6, and Smith County 35-0. Their only loss has been to Cookeville 33-18.

After getting off to a slow start and giving up a touchdown to Cannon County, the Tigers scored 49 unanswered points enroute to a decisive victory over the Lions last week. Still, Tiger Coach Steve Trapp said his team could have done better early on.

“That is not what we expected. We always want to start fast but last week it really wasn’t what Cannon County was doing. It was more on us but when we settled down and got our minds right we started making some plays so it turned out for the best for us,” he said.

As for this week’s opponent, Livingston Academy, Coach Trapp said “They want to run the football and eat that clock and play really good defense which is not a bad recipe. For us its going to be all about three and outs and getting them behind the chains in early downs and force their quarterback to put the ball up in the air. If that happens I really like the guys we have in the secondary to maybe come down with a few. It’s no different for our defense this week than any other. We have to rally to the football and don’t assume that a teammate is going to make the tackle. We want everybody pursuing the ball. Good things happen when a defense does that”.

“Murphy’s Matchups” airs at 6 p.m. featuring the Guru of Tennessee High School Football Murphy Fair.

“Tiger Talk” begins at 6:30 p.m. featuring DCHS Coach Steve Trapp and Tiger Football Players Axel Aldino, Isaac Knowles, and Desmond Nokes. John Pryor, the Voice of the Tigers, is the host of the program.

The Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program (TAEP) application period this year is October 1-7. There are several changes this year, so please review the applications carefully. Paper copies of the application are available at the UT Extension office at 722 South Congress Boulevard in the County Complex Building. Applications are on the table by the door. You can also access the applications on-line at www.tn.gov/taep.

As a reminder, if you are wanting to apply in the Beef Category of the TAEP you need a valid Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Certification. If you would like to apply this year, but your BQA has expired or you have never had one, please contact Johnny Barnes at 615-289-1165 or jbarnes1@utk.edu to find out more information on obtaining a BQA certification. The TAEP also contains programs for Nursery, Sheep, Goats, Row Crops and more. Please look at the appropriate application if you wish to apply.
