Darrell Johnson to Run for Constable in the 2nd District

November 21, 2019

A total of six constable candidates have now picked up qualifying petitions for the March 3 DeKalb County Democratic Primary.

The latest is Darrell Johnson who is seeking his party’s nomination for constable in the 2nd district

The other five as WJLE has previously reported are Waylon Kyle in the 1st district, Paul Cantrell in the 4th district, Mark Milam in the 5th district, Jason Brown in the 6th district, and Johnny King in the 7th district. Cantrell, Milam and King are incumbents seeking re-election.

All but Johnson and Brown have already returned their petitions to the election commission in order to become a qualified candidate.

Meanwhile Tom Duggin, as WJLE previously reported, has picked up and returned his petition to seek the Democratic nomination for Assessor of Property in the March 3 primary. He is now a qualified candidate.

Local primaries will be held in conjunction with the Presidential Preference Primary on March 3.

“The DeKalb County Democratic Party will hold a primary for the office of Assessor of Property and Constable in all seven districts,” said Administrator of Elections Dennis Stanley. “The Republican Party will select their nominees for those offices by caucus.” In addition, both local parties will hold a primary for the office of Criminal Court Judge Part II in the 13th Judicial District.

“I understand it can be a little confusing to the voters and candidates,” Stanley said, “but in simple terms Democratic candidates for Assessor of Property, Constable and Circuit Court Judge must qualify by petition and they are now available. Republican candidates for Circuit Court Judge only must qualify by petition. The other offices are chosen by another party method.”

He also reminded potential Independent candidates that they must qualify by the petition process and can obtain a petition beginning at the same time, even though they would not appear on the ballot until August.

Here are the key dates for the March 3, 2020 election:

Qualifying deadline—Noon December 12

Voter registration deadline—February 3, 2020

Early Voting period—Feb. 12 through February 25, 2020

Smithville Elementary School is sponsoring a “Canned Food Drive” for the holidays to help fight hunger and your support is needed.

The effort is being done in support of the “DeKalb County Back Pack Program” for Christmas boxes to be sent home with children and their families.

Summer Cantrell, SES Principal informed the Board of Education about the project last Thursday night.

“We have partnered with Elise Driver and the DeKalb County Coordinated School Health Program to sponsor a canned food drive during the holiday season to help those in need. Our goal is to collect 1,200 canned goods by December 5. As of  last Thursday our students have donated 543 kinds of canned goods for this effort. You may drop off any canned goods that you have which are not expired. Bring them to the office as a donation,” said Cantrell.

Please make sure also that donated cans are free from dents.

The grade that collects the most cans will win recess equipment.
