Gov. Lee Appoints Shawn Fry as New Judge in 13th District

Governor Bill Lee has made his appointment for the newly created criminal court judgeship in the 13th Judicial District.

54-year-old Shawn Fry of Cookeville will soon take the bench serving the court in Part III of the district which includes Clay, Cumberland, DeKalb, Overton, Pickett, Putnam and White counties.

“I am proud to announce the appointment of this highly qualified individual and value the significant experience he will bring to this role,” said Gov. Lee. “I appreciate his leadership and am confident he will serve Tennesseans with integrity.”

Fry currently serves as an attorney at Fry, Fry, Knight & Looper. Fry earned his bachelor’s degree at Tennessee Technological University and juris doctor at Nashville School of Law.

Fry was one of three nominees recommended to the governor for the appointment by the Tennessee Trial Court Vacancy Commission in July. The  other nominees were Brandon Scott Griffin of Sparta and Benjamin Marsee of Cookeville.

The new judicial position was created by the Tennessee General Assembly this year.

Fry will serve as an appointee until the next regular election in August, 2024. The person so elected shall hold office until September 1, 2030. Thereafter, the judge of part III of the circuit court shall be elected for a full eight-year term.

Other judges currently serving in the district are Republicans Chancellor-Ronald Thurman, Circuit Court Judge Part I- William T. “Will” Ridley, Circuit Court Judge Part II- Caroline E. Knight, Criminal Court Judge Part I- Gary S. McKenzie, and Criminal Court Judge Part II-Wesley Bray.




Joe Hearn Memorial Scholarship Fund Poker Run Saturday

In what has become an annual event, the Alexandria Lions Club will sponsor a fundraiser Saturday, September 30 in support of a DCHS graduate and in memory of a longtime friend.

The Joe Hearn Memorial Scholarship Fund Poker Run will be held at the DeKalb County Fairgrounds in Alexandria featuring Hot Rods, Bikes, etc.

The Lions Club established this memorial scholarship fund as a tribute to the memory of Joe Hearn and is awarded to a high school vocational student each year.

Joe Hearn was an avid Ford Mustang lover and longtime dedicated member of the Alexandria Lions Club.

The entry fee for the Poker Run is $25 and $10.00 per passenger and it includes a BBQ meal. Prizes will be awarded for high and low score overall. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the departure time is 9 a.m. The run will be approximately 2 hours. The entire route will be on paved roads. All are encouraged to participate to help further the education of a DCHS graduate.




WJLE’s Fearless Forecasters College Football Talk Show Airs Today (Thursday) at 4:30 p.m.

Dewain Hendrixson and Grant James of the James Gang are now tied for the lead among WJLE’s Fearless Forecasters picking college football winners after the first four weeks of the season.

Overall Hendrixson and James each own a record of 45-15 followed by Jared Davis and Scott Goodwin each at 44-16, Ricky Atnip 43-17, Darrell Gill of the Gill Gang and John Pryor each at 42-18, and Scott Brown and Chad Kirby each at 41-19.

For the week, Grant James had the best week at 14-1 followed by Darrell Gill, Ricky Atnip, Jared Davis, Scott Goodwin, and Dewain Hendrixson each at 13-2, John Pryor 12-3, and Scott Brown and Chad Kirby each at 11-4.

Two Fearless Forecasters hit their underdog picks last week. Jared Davis added to his lead with 3 points as Washington State defeated Oregon State 38 to 35 and Scott Goodwin got on the board with 6 points with West Virginia’s 20-13 win over Texas Tech.

Overall, Jared Davis leads in underdog points with 35 followed by Dewain Hendrixson with 12.5, Ricky Atnip with 7.5, and Chad Kirby and John Pryor each with 6.5, and Scott Goodwin with 6 points.

Today (Thursday) the Forecasters will be picking winners in the following games:

MTSU at Western Kentucky, Notre Dame at Duke, Utah at Oregon State, Louisville at N.C. State, Clemson at Syracuse, Boise State at Memphis, Cincinnati at BYU, Georgia at Auburn, Florida at Kentucky, Texas A&M at Arkansas, Alabama at Mississippi State, LSU at Ole Miss, Missouri at Vanderbilt, South Carolina at Tennessee and in the NFL the Cincinnati Bengals at the Tennessee Titans.
