Liberty Christmas Parade Sunday, December 6

The annual Liberty Christmas Parade will be Sunday, December 6 starting at 2 p.m. with the line-up at 1 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church.

No pre-registration is needed. Anyone wanting to participate may just show up for the line-up at 1 p.m. There are three categories of parade competition including floats, children and small animals, and antique vehicles. Prizes will be given for 1st place in each category ($50), 2nd place ($25) and 3rd place ($25). There will be drawings for prizes after the parade and Santa will be on hand for photos. No refreshments this year because of the Covid-19.

Mrs. Laura Daniel, a teacher at Dekalb Middle School in Smithville, Tennessee, is one of only 58 teachers selected for a National History Day® (NHD) fall professional development program. This new course focuses on using online Library of Congress primary and secondary sources to develop and support student research skills and is a feature of NHD’s membership in the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Consortium.

The 58 teachers selected represent 40 of National History Day’s affiliates across the country and around the world. The NHD network of 58 affiliates includes all 50 states and the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and international school programs in China, South Asia, and South Korea.

“This course has particular value now as teachers and students continue to address challenges of non-traditional learning settings required by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said National History Day Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “The crucial skills Mrs. Daniel is learning and honing over the course of this series will benefit her students for many years to come. As a Library of Congress TPS Consortium member, we are incredibly fortunate to be able to offer this opportunity for teachers.”

For several months, Mrs. Daniel works with her peers around the country and National History Day staff to build knowledge for teaching with primary sources. Upon completing the series, she will have demonstrated the ability to pair Library of Congress resources with active learning strategies to inspire, engage, and support her students.

A week ago a Smithville man was seriously injured after his car struck and killed a horse on Highway 70 at Snow Hill. 20 year old Jose Torres remains in critical condition at Vanderbilt Hospital.

According to Trooper Chris Meness of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Torres was traveling west going down Snow Hill in a 2020 Ford Fusion last Tuesday night around 9:30 p.m. when he came upon a horse standing in the roadway. Although Torres hit his brakes trying to avoid a collision the car struck the horse causing the animal to crash through the windshield seriously injuring Torres. The car then crossed the eastbound lanes of Highway 70 and went across Driver Lane before hitting a guard rail and coming to a stop.

Torres was airlifted from near the scene and flown to Vanderbilt Hospital.

According to authorities, there were three horses in the road at the time of the crash which caused a separate accident at the same time and place.

THP Lieutenant Billy Prater reported that 32 year old Alexandra Hancock of Smithville was traveling east on Highway 70 in a 2001 Chevy Tahoe when she hit a horse which was standing in the road. Hancock told the officer that she tried to avoid hitting the horse but was unable to do so. After impact, Hancock pulled to the shoulder of the road to wait for law enforcement officers to arrive. Hancock was not injured.
