Santa Comes to Town

Holiday lovers young and old enjoyed the sights and sounds of the annual Smithville Christmas parade late Saturday afternoon followed by other activities during Christmas on the Square.

For the second year in a row, both events were combined into one night of holiday fun with the parade kicking it all off just as the sun was starting to set.

Many parked along the route to see the show as the parade motored down Congress Boulevard before turning onto East Main Street by City Hall into the Public Square. Others gathered downtown to get a closer look as the parade passed by and to scoop up some candy tossed to them by participants.

Wilson Bank & Trust won 1st place for their float entry. Second place went to the Vintage Owl and Ignite took 3rd place. The DeKalb County High School Band won the Spirit Award presented by the Smithville Business and Professional Women’s Club.

The parade was sponsored by the Smithville Fire Department.

The DeKalb Animal Shelter is seeking a forever home for “Nola” the WJLE featured “Pet of the Week”.

“She is our longest resident here at the shelter. Nola has been here since August and we definitely would like to find a home for this sweet girl. She is about a year and a half old. Nola is spade and up to date on all of her vaccinations. She is great with everyone. Nola loves to play. She loves kittens and adult cats. Her fee has been reduced to $45. If you would like to meet her put in an application on our website //www.dekalbanimalcoalition.org/ and we will call you to set up an appointment,” said Shelter employee Emmaly Bennett.

“Our adoptions are now at a lower cost due to subsidies from the Friends of the DeKalb Animal Shelter group who is sponsoring $40 for each cat and $50 for each dog. That makes the fees to the public much more affordable,” said Shelter Director Megan Moore.

The COVID related death count in DeKalb County is now 25, an increase of 3 since Sunday, November 29.

According to the Tennessee Department of Health, DeKalb County has 166 active cases of COVID-19 as of Friday, December 4. Twenty one new cases were reported Friday.

There have been 1,267 confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19 since March in DeKalb County , 34 have been hospitalized, and 1,076 are now inactive or have recovered.

Over the last seven days, (November 28 to December 4) DeKalb County had a case count of 154 for a daily case rate of 107.4 per 100,000 residents. An increase from the seven day period of November 23 to November 29 when the case count was 91 for a daily case rate of 63.4 per 100,000 residents.

Over the last 14 days, (November 21 to December4) DeKalb County’s case count was 211 for a daily case rate of 73.6 per 100,000 residents. That is up from the 14 day period of November 16-29 when the case count was 202 for a daily case rate of 70.4 per 100,000 residents.

For the 14 days prior (November 11-20), the case count was 251 for a daily case rate of 87.5 per 100, 000 residents. That compares with November 2-15 when the case count was 216 for a daily case rate of 75.3 per 100,000 residents.

From March 5 to December 4, DeKalb County has had a total of 1,267 confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19 for a daily case rate of 23.4 per 100,000 residents.

Over the last 7 days DeKalb County has averaged 100.3 tests per day (489.4 tests per 100,000 residents) and over the last 7 days the average percent positive was 16.7 %.
