Talented Tiger running back Colby Barnes had another big night scoring five of the eight touchdowns in DeKalb County’s 55-7 thumping of the Cannon County Lions at Woodbury Friday night.
DeKalb County improves to 5-1 overall and will host the struggling Livingston Academy Wildcats (0-6) next Friday night, September 30 for homecoming in a region matchup.
For the game, Barnes had 28 carries for 242 yards and 5 touchdowns bringing his rushing total for the season to date at 1,010 yards and 11 touchdowns.
In addition to Barnes’ stellar performance, quarterback Jordan Parker scored a rushing touchdown as did running backs Ari White and Juan Ortega.
After stripping the ball in Cannon County’s first possession, the Tigers struck quickly on a 1 yard run by Barnes with 10:37 left in the 1st period. Ortega booted the extra point for a 7-0 DeKalb County lead.
Barnes got the Tigers on the board again with 7:42 left in the 1st period on a 21-yard touchdown run. The PAT try failed as the snap sailed over the holder’s head, but DeKalb led 13-0.
Parker scored from 4 yards out with 4:19 to go in the 1st period. Barnes then converted on a 2-point conversion run to give the Tigers a 21-0 lead.
DeKalb County padded its lead at 28-0 with 7:49 left in the 2nd period on a 4-yard touchdown run by Barnes and the Ortega extra point.
By intermission, the Tigers had built a 35 to 0 advantage with the last score of the half coming on a 17-yard run by Barnes with 5:20 left.
Barnes scored his last touchdown of the night with 8 minutes to go in the 3rd period on a 4-yard run and with the kick by Ortega, the Tigers were up 42-0.
Ari White scored his first touchdown of the year on a 1 yard run with 11:24 left in the 4th period. Ortega added the PAT to give DeKalb County a commanding 49-0 lead.
Cannon County prevented the shutout with 6:39 left in the game as QB Kolby Miller scored on a 4-yard keeper. Kicker Jack Byford converted the PAT and the Lions were on the board trailing 49-7.
The Tigers added the exclamation point for the game on a 3-yard touchdown run by Juan Ortega with 2:26 left for a 55-7 lead after the PAT attempt was blocked and that was the final score 55-7.
Also of note, Tigers Ty Webb and John Ellis each had an interception in the game.
