DCHS to Host College Application Week

DeKalb County High School will host College Application Week October 24-28. All DCHS seniors who have not already applied to college or technical school are encouraged to do so during that week.

The schedule is as follows:

*Monday October 24:
Sign up for the week’s events in the counseling office if you have not done so. Ask your counselors about college app week, college application, financial aid, and Tennessee Promise

*Tuesday, October 25:
College/TN Promise
Application Lab-Library 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, & 6th Blocks and 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. during Parent-Teacher Conference
First Tennessee Promise meeting for students who are going to use the Tennessee Promise Scholarship. This is the first of two mandatory TN Promise meetings

*Wednesday, October 26:
Scholarship/College Essay Lab-Walteen Parker’s Classroom-4th, 5th, & 6th Blocks
Any senior who is not enrolled in Mrs. Parker’s English classes this semester who would like to sit in on this lesson is welcome to sign up to attend during 4th Block. Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Lori Myrick will co-teach a lesson on how to write a well-written scholarship essay. A well-written essay greatly increases you chances of winning a scholarship. Please take advantage of this assistance.

*Thursday, October 27:
College Shirt Day
All faculty, staff, and students are invited to wear your favorite college shirt

*Friday, October 28:
DCHS 2016 College & Career Fair
All DCHS students will have the opportunity to visit with college and career representatives in the gym. This event will take place during 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and part of 4th Block.

A DeKalb County High School Baseball Alumni Game is set for Saturday, November 5 at 9:00 a.m. at the DeKalb County Baseball Field. All former DeKalb County baseball players come out and showcase your baseball skills. Meet current players and coaches; and prove to your former teammates, family, and friends you haven’t lost a step. The field will be open for batting practice and 8:00am and the game will begin at 9:30a.m. Please spread the word to any former players that may be interested. Lunch will be provided after. Turkey Trot Walkathon-Benefiting The Back Pack Program

Come join us for Coordinated School Health's 1st Annual Turkey Trot Walkathon on November 12, 2016 at Green Brook Park. Registration starts at 9:00am. Walkathon starts at 10:00am and ends at 11:30am. Prizes will be given to top finishers in each age category. Participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for a donation to The Back Pack Program. There will be snacks, games, and face painting. Come out and enjoy a fun way to get the whole family involved in some physical activity and help out a great cause! FREE Medicare Help Available

Medicare Open Enrollment for 2017 begins October 15. For those who are eligible to sign up for Medicare or have questions about making changes to their Medicare health plans and/or Medicare Part D prescription drug plans, free, un-biased Medicare information and counseling is available through the Upper Cumberland Area Agency on Aging and Disability.

SHIP/SMP will be at the Liberty Senior Center Monday, October 24 from 9:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.. To schedule an appointment, call 615-536-5422 Monday through Thursday.

Open enrollment for the coming year runs from October 15 to December 7. During this time, currently enrolled Medicare beneficiaries can make changes to their plans. The staff at UCAAAD, a division of Upper Cumberland Development District, and volunteers are trained to provide free, un-biased counseling and advice for those seeking assistance with making changes to their Medicare plans.

It is important for Medicare beneficiaries to compare their current plans to the 2016 coverage options, which will be released on October 1, 2015. UCAAAD staff helps those seeking assistance with plan comparisons without selling anything and can be reached at the toll free SHIP line at 1-877-801-0044.

Throughout open enrollment, UCAAAD staff and volunteers will also be offering Medicare counseling at locations throughout the Upper Cumberland. A full list of appointment times and locations can be found at or at www.facebook/ucddconnect or by calling the toll free SHIP line at 1-877-801-0044.

TN SHIP Offers FREE Medicare Help

Got Medicare? Got Questions? TN SHIP Medicare Information and Counseling has answers. Get FREE Medicare help! SHIP/SMP representatives from the Upper Cumberland Area Agency on Aging & Disability are offering free Medicare counseling throughout the Upper Cumberland. Representatives are available to help counsel on any Medicare questions, abuse or concerns. They will also screen Medicare beneficiaries for extra help with Part D. Contact SHIP at 1-877-801-0044 or 931-432-4150 for an appointment. SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) and SMP (Empowering Seniors to Prevent Healthcare Fraud) cover all 14 Upper Cumberland counties.

Free High School Equivalency Classes

Free High School Equivalency Classes are available days and evenings at the County Complex at 722 South Congress Boulevard. Enter through the UT Extension/Motlow College Doors.

Ongoing registration is Mondays from 3:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. and Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
