"Giggin' for Grads" Frog Giggin Tournament

The fourth annual DeKalb County Young Farmers & Ranchers "Giggin' for Grads" frog gigging tournament is set for Friday, June 24

Proceeds benefit the agricultural scholarship fund. Registration will be held from 5:30 pm to 7pm, June 24 in the DeKalb County Community Complex parking lot.

While groups such as "Friends of Animals" recognize that gigging frogs is legal, they claim it is a cruel killing of wild frogs. For the last three years, animal rights activists have come to Smithville to conduct peaceful protests of the frog gigging tournament.

Weigh in by 1 a.m. with awards immediately following. No late weigh-ins accepted. One team member must be present to win. You may pre-register at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau or DeKalb Farmers Coop until June 22.

Open to teams of 2-4 people at $15.00 per person. All ages welcome.

1st place 25%-bag of 15 heaviest frogs wins

2nd place 15%- They will keep your frogs for a community frog leg fry the next day

3rd place 10%- Door prizes will be given away.

Smithville FCE Club Meeting

The Smithville FCE Club meets every second Thursday of the month at 10:00a.m. in the UT Extension meeting room of the County Complex. The Club welcomes women who are interested in home and garden activities, arts, crafts, educational and community matters. The next meeting will be July 14, 2016. Refreshments will be served.

DCHS Football Cheerleaders' Mini Cheer Camp

The DCHS Football Cheerleaders will host a cheer camp for ages 5-13. The camp will be held July 13-15 (Wednesday-Friday). Each session will be from 9:00 a.m. until noon at the Northside Elementary School gym. The cost $45.00 per participant (this includes a T-shirt). Each additional sibling will receive $5.00 off their enrollment.

The cheer camp is designed to teach the fundamentals of cheering. It will include: cheer conditioning , motion drills, jumps, chants, and cheers. This is a fundamental camp-no stunts/tumbling/or building will be incorporated into the camp. Campers will be divided into age groups. Due to the fact that the camp will be held in the NES gym, they ask that ONLY bottled water be brought into the gym.

Complete and return the following information with payment by June 15 to: Cindy Webb, 260 Hendrix Road, Dowelltown, TN 37059. Late registrations will be accepted but not guaranteed a shirt.

Please include the participant’s name, grade, age, date of birth, parents or guardians name and address, phone number, cell number, emergency contact number and T-shirt size.

On Your Mark, Get Set, READ at the Library

Registration for the Summer Reading Club & Read-to-me Club begins on June 2nd and will run through June 30 at Justin Potter and Alexandria Libraries. Children can set their own reading goal and will receive a participation certificate and other goodies. This year's Summer Reading theme is "On Your Mark, Get Set READ so everyone can be a sports star.

The fun begins with the opening party for all ages at Justin Potter Library on Thursday, June 2 at 2:00 p.m. featuring Kevin Kidd and his high energy program and continues through June 30th with story times, Get Set Read Activity Stations, Kids Yoga, The Organ Wise Guys presented by the Health Department, and the Finale Party on June 30 featuring Ventriloquist Crystal Birdwell and Gang.

Alexandria Library's Story and Activity Time will be June 8, 15, & 22 at 2:00 p.m.

To anyone who has relatives buried in the Jones Cemetery near Silver Point -- there is a DESPERATE need of funds for mowing and maintenance.

Senior Community Service Employment Program

UCHRA would like to invite anyone 55 years or older who meets the eligibility guidelines to be a part of the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). This program provides on-the-job training for older individuals seeking gainful employment in the Upper Cumberland region. This training is twenty hours per week at the current minimum wage with government and non-profit agencies. They provide assessment and testing services to determine your present skill level and for the types of occupations you would like to train. They conduct workshops to teach you the best methods for finding, applying, interviewing, getting, and keeping the right job. They can also refer you to the Tennessee Career Center for basic computer training as well as other employment and training programs.
