Tigers take second place in District Tournament

May 7, 2008

In a pair of unlikely finishes, the DeKalb County Tiger baseball team took second place in the District 7-AA Tournament in Baxter, Wednesday night.

The Tigers had to rally from two runs down in the bottom of the seventh inning to eliminate Smith County, 7-6, in the loser's bracket final. The DC boys then let a two-run lead slip away in the bottom of the seventh against top-seeded Upperman in the championship game, and lost, 3-2, in eight innings.

DeKalb County and Smith County played four scoreless innings with just hit between them in the first game. The Owls finally struck with a run in the top of the fifth inning, and the Tigers countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Tigers and Lions played scoreless through the first half, but DC struck with a pair of goals early in the second half. Brandon Puckett nailed the game's first goal on an assist by Zach Wilbur, in the 14th minute of the half, and Ryan Leiser tallied the second goal, just over a minute later, on another assist by Wilbur. The Tigers had a total of 17 shots on goal, while the Lions had seven shots, all turned away by DeKalb goal-keeper, Tyler Woods, including a penalty kick by Miguel Novoa, late in the second half.

Tigerettes crush York; meet Macon in winner's bracket final

May 6, 2008

Morgan Page pitched a six inning one-hitter, and the DeKalb County Tigerette bats awoke in the fourth inning, as the local fast-pitch softball team shut out upstart York Institute, 10-0, in the District 7-AA Tournament, Tuesday in Baxter. The seventh-seeded Dragonettes had upset sixth-seeded Smith County and third-seeded Livingston Academy in the first two rounds of the tournament on Monday, after winning only one district game in the regular season.

York held their own with the second-seeded Tigerettes for the game's first three innings. DeKalb County went down in order in the first two innings, but scratched out a pair of hits in the bottom of the third, on a single apiece by Shay Sullivan and Kayla Fish, with one out on the board. Both runners were left stranded, however, as York retired the following two hitters.
