George Edward Griffin

George Edward Griffin age 77 of Smithville, passed away Sunday night, February 3, 2019 at NHC HealthCare Center in Smithville. He was born January 22, 1942 to his parents, the late Clyde and Ludie Mae Hicks Griffin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Griffin; sister, Lorelle Murphy and brother, Eston Griffin. George was a nurseryman. He is survived by 1 son, Daryl (Denise) Griffin of Smithville; 1 granddaughter, Sabrina (Cody) Wells of Hill Air Force Base, Utah; 2 great-grandchildren, Elias and Eagen Wells. Funeral services will be conducted 2 PM Thursday, February 7, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the Griffin family will be Wednesday 2 PM until 8 PM and Thursday 10 AM until the time of the service at 2 PM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Dave Mayo, Jr.

Dave Mayo, Jr. age 72 of Smithville, passed away Wednesday morning, January 30, 2019 at Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro. He was born September 26, 1946 to his parents, the late Dave and Annie May Mayo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Elizabeth Mayo; son, Daniel Mayo; 2 sisters, Mable Mooneyham and Jean Bilbrey and 2 brothers, Howard and George Mayo. Dave was a member of the House of Prayer and retired from Carrier. Survivors include 2 sons, Michael Mayo and Greg Mayo both of Smithville; 6 grandchildren, Michael Mayo, Destinee Mayo, Ashley Mayo, Gregory Mayo, Kelly Mayo and Christina Mayo; 8 great-grandchildren; 4 brothers, Buddy (Marcia) Mayo, David Mayo, Teddy (Barbara) Mayo and Roy Mayo all of Woodbury; sister-in-law, Jean May of Gassaway; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 PM Friday, February 1, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday 12 Noon until 8 PM and Friday 10 AM until the time of the service at 2 PM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Maxine Clark Spurgeon

Maxine Clark Spurgeon age 95 of Newport, TN and a native of DeKalb County, passed away Tuesday morning, January 29, 2019 at Wellington Manor in Newport. She was born January 20, 1924 to her parents, the late Harry and Ida Taylor Clark. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Willie Love and long-time special friend, Bill Ervin. Maxine was a Baptist and a retired shirt factory worker and she enjoyed sewing. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Lowhorn Cueny of Jupiter, FL; son, Randy (Pat) Spurgeon of Newport, TN; 4 grandchildren, Kimberly Jepsen of McLean, VA, Tamara (Todd) Riley of Grosse Pointe Park, MI, Stacy Self and Stephanie Miller both of Dandridge, TN and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1 PM Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday 11: 00 AM until the time of the service at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mt. Holly Cemetery Fund or the American Cancer Society, in memory of Ms. Maxine. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Rose Marie Hines

53 year old Rose Marie Hines of Dowelltown passed away Monday at her residence. The family has chosen direct cremation. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth Young and Frances DeJohn. Survivors include a son, Aaron Hines of Dowelltown. One daughter, Abby and James Caplinger of Smithville. Three grandchildren, Bryson Hines, Brookelynn, and Brayden Caplinger all of Smithville. Two brothers, Bill DeJohn of Chelsea, Michigan and Paul DeJohn of Smithscreek, Michigan. Two sisters, Mary Davis of Smithscreek, Michigan and Evelyn DiGovanni of Port Huron, Michigan. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.




Barbra Ann Holder Atnip

January 27, 2019

Barbra Ann Holder Atnip age 58 of Smithville, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2019 at St. Thomas Dekalb Hospital in Smithville. Born Jan. 20, 1961, she was the daughter of the late Hatton Alexander Holder, Sr. and Shirley Ann Stanley Holder. Barbra was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Eric Atnip, Sr. and a brother, Hatton Holder, Jr. She is survived by her sons, Steven (Crystal) Atnip of Smithville and Eric (Jennifer) Atnip of Gainesboro; grandchildren, Erika, Stephanie, Savannah, April and Toni; sister, Patricia (James) Silcox of Liberty; Jackie (Donna) Holder of Liberty and Robert (Ladonna) Holder of Hartsville; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2019 at Hunter Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. till service time on Monday. Interment will be at Hearn Hill Cemetery. Linda Sue Parsley Foutch

On Friday, January 25, 2019, Linda Sue Parsley Foutch, age seventy-seven, passed from this life at her home in Smithville, Tennessee.

Linda Sue was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-six years, David Leon (“Boxie”) Foutch; her parents, Columbus Vernon Parsley and Ophia Odell Pack Parsley of Smithville; her brothers, Chester Parsley and Howard Parsley; her sister, Lorell Parsley Hobson; and her nephew, Larry Parsley, all of Smithville, Tennessee.

Linda Sue is survived by her sister, Peggy Parsley Johnson, of Smithville; her brother-in-law, Glen A. Foutch (and wife, Lois) Foutch, of Smyrna; her sister-in-law, Anna Jean Bond, of McMinnville; her nieces, Rita Hobson Cripps (and husband, Don Cripps), Virginia Hobson White (and husband, Mack White), Teresa Johnson Caldwell (and husband, Larry Caldwell), all of Smithville; and Cynthia Foutch Richardson (and husband, Tim Richardson), of Cookeville; and her nephews, Ricky Parsley (and wife, Maria Parsley), of Woodbury; Todd Foutch (and wife, Nina Foutch), of Smyrna; and Jeff Bond (and wife, Angela Bond), of McMinnville. Linda Sue is also survived by numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

Linda Sue was a member of the Smithville Church of Christ. She was employed with Timers in Smithville for over thirty years. Linda Sue enjoyed cooking, baking, and gardening.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 27, at 2:00 P.M., at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 26 commencing at 4:00 P.M., and ending at 8:00 P.M.; and on Sunday, January 27 beginning at 10:00 A.M., and continuing until the funeral service

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Smithville Church of Christ or to the DeKalb Animal Coalition.
