OCTOBER 11: *The Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency (UCHRA) will hold a commodities distribution for DeKalb County, Thursday, October 11, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the UCHRA Office 726 S Congress Blvd, Smithville, TN Everyone must present a valid UCHRA commodity card in order to receive commodities.  To sign up or reprint lost commodities cards contact your local UCHRA office. The Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, color, national origin, religion, or disability in admission to, access to, or operations of its programs, services or activities.“This project is funded under a Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee.”

OCTOBER 12: * Judy Redmon with Judy’s Traveling Friends” will meet on Friday, October 12 from 3 to 5 p.m. to discuss her next adventure to MacInaw Island in upper Michigan. The meeting will be to discuss dates and cost for the trip. Unlike Wanda’s trips, youth can go under parental supervision. The meeting will be at the County Complex, History Room. OCTOBER 11-NOVEMBER 1: *DeKalb Jr Pro Basketball signups will be held in the main lobby of the DeKalb County Community Center on October  11th, 16th, 30th and November 1st from 6 pm to 8 pm.  The cost is $30 to be paid by cash or check at the time of signup.  We will NOT be having signups on the day of tryouts this year. We will NOT be accepting any late signups after November 1st. NO EXCEPTIONS.  Please mark your calendar and make sure your child is signed up before the deadline.  Boys and girls will play together in Training League. All other leagues are separate with a girls and boys division. You can play your child up in age group but will not be able to play down.  If your child is returning to the same team as the previous year, they will not be required to attend tryouts.  If your child is moving up in age division, they are required to attend tryouts.  Tryouts will be held November 3rd at Northside Elementary.  Tryout times for each age division are as follows.

2nd & 3rd grade girls 11:00 a.m.
2nd & 3rd grade boys 11:30 a.m.

OCTOBER 13: *The 5th annual Paislee’s Foundation Craft & Home Show  will take place on Saturday, October 13 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. inside the Kenneth Sandlin Building at the DeKalb County Fairgrounds in Alexandria. Admission is free and there will be plenty of free parking. Donations will be accepted for the foundation. If you would like to set up an inside booth as a craft vendor the cost is $25.00 for a 10’x8’ space. Outside space is also available. Demonstrations are welcome. All proceeds fund Paislee’s Foundation. No one associated with the foundation gets paid. All funds collected go to support those grieving from still birth and infant loss. OCTOBER 13: *The 13th Annual History Hayride, a fundraising event for the Friends of Edgar Evins State Park, will be held on Saturday, October 13 at the park. Registration is now open for the Hayride. The cost is $15.00 per person. Seating is limited. This event sells out very quickly so be sure to get your reservations made early to ensure your seats! A Visa or Master Card will be accepted. Ride hay wagons back into the “olden days”, with approximately 9 stops along the route where costumed characters will reveal the history of the park and area. A guide on each wagon will provide additional narratives between stops. This year’s hayride offers history, mystery, and theater. This is not a Halloween themed event and is not suitable for small children or those who have difficulty sitting still for 2 1/2 hours. Ten wagons will leave at approximately 30-minute intervals from the park office and return approximately 2 1/2 hours later. Reservations will be for specific report times from 1:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Friends of Edgar Evins State Park will provide complimentary hot beverages and sell individual sized servings of home baked cookies and brownies in the park office. As in past there will also be complimentary marshmallows to roast over the campfire in front of the office. Friends of Edgar Evins State Park is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization with the purpose of helping the park. The History Hayride is a fundraiser by the Friends in cooperation with park staff. OCTOBER 20: *DeKalb Community Complex will host it’s first FREE Fall Fest on October 20th. Everything will be free and this event is geared towards kids and families! There will be games, cake walk, face painting, Kids arts and crafts, popcorn, live bluegrass music, line dancing class at 12:30pm, and Much more. “ Our newest member to our team here at DCC, Ashley Medlin is heading this event up and she is excited to get the community involved!”. Says Josh Issac DCC Director. The DeKalb Farmers market will also be extending their hours to be apart of the festive fun! They will have pumpkin and fall venders here for your fall needs! Contact them to see about booth space! So far DeKalb Senior Citizens, DeKalb 4-H, Justin Potter Library, Smithville AG, and DeKalb Coalition are helping out! OCTOBER 21: *The Evans Family Reunion will be Sunday, October 21 at 1 p.m. at the Church of God Annex building on Highway 70 west. Bring a covered dish and family pictures.

OCTOBER 17-NOVEMBER 1: *Early Voting times have been set for the November 6 Tennessee General Election.  Early voting begins Wednesday October 17 through Thursday November 1 on the first floor of the DeKalb County Courthouse. Voters will elect a Governor, U.S. Senator, Congressman in the 6th District, State Senator in District 17, and State Representatives in Districts 40 & 46. The early voting times are as follows:

Mondays—1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Tuesdays—9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Wednesdays—9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Thursdays—2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Fridays—9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Saturdays—9 a.m. to noon.

Election day voting is 8:00 a.m. until 7 p.m. at all 15 precincts in the county. Meanwhile the last day to register to vote in time for the November 6 election is October 9. The deadline for receiving an application for a by-mail ballot is October 30

OCTOBER 19: *The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting a Seat Belt checkpoint in Dekalb County October 19th 2018 on State Highway 96.  Recognizing that an alarmingly high number of vehicle occupants killed in fatal crashes were unrestrained, the Tennessee Highway Patrol has elected to create an enforcement campaign aimed at drastically reducing the number of unrestrained drivers and occupants. Troopers will also be on active patrol observing for unrestrained drivers and occupants of motor vehicles. The Tennessee Highway Patrol has found seat belt checkpoints to be an effective means of enforcing seat belt and child restraint laws of Tennessee while ensuring the protection of all motorists. 

OCTOBER 19: *The L.B.J. & C. Smithville Head Start Center will be hosting an Open House  on Friday, October 19 from 1-4 p.m. Special activities for the kids and refreshments will be available. The staff and parents are looking forward to showing their center and the children’s arts and crafts. Head Start provides children with activities that help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically. The center is located at 118 Kimberly Lane.

OCTOBER 23: *DeKalb County Schools will be closed for  fall break October 8-19. Parent-Teacher Conferences at DeKalb County High School will be Tuesday, October 23  from 3-6 p.m.

OCTOBER 24-31: * Smithville Elementary Upcoming Events for October 2018

OCTOBER 26: *Who makes the best chili in DeKalb County? Find out on Friday, October 26th when Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County hosts its 15th annual Chili Cook-off and Bake Sale. Chili will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the DeKalb Courthouse Lawn. In case of bad weather, the event will be moved to the DeKalb County Complex. For a cash donation, eat all the chili you want and vote for your favorite chili and the best decorated booth. You be the judge. A limited supply of pottery bowls will be available for $20. Delicious baked goods prepared by members of local churches will also be for sale. Take out is also available. OCTOBER 26-28: *The Off The Beaten Path Studio Tour will be October 26-28, 2018 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), 10am – 5pm each day.  Celebrating its 19th year, the tour has grown to include 14 stops with 29 participating artists.  Artists will be demonstrating their craft mediums and offering handcrafted shopping opportunities at every stop on the tour. OCTOBER 27: *The Smithville Business & Professional Women’s Club is now taking applications for its annual Fall Fest Pageants to be held October 27, 2018 at the DeKalb Community Complex. Contests are for girls two years through highs school age. Entry fee is $25 with optional categories available at $5 per category. Deadline for entry is Friday, October 19, 2018. Applications were distributed at each school and are available on the event’s Facebook page and at the Smithville Review For questions, please contact 615-464-5056.

OCTOBER 27:* The Brush Creek Lions Club will host it’s annual “Brush Creek Community Fest” on October 27 at the Community Center.  The chili supper will begin at 5:00 p.m. with adult plates for $5.00 and children for $3.00. An old fashioned cake walk and auction will begin at 6:00 p.m. Proceeds will be used to restore the “old schoolhouse” as a community center and Lions White Cane Support. The Lions Club encourages you to bring your old eye glasses. Please call 683-8991 for more information.

OCTOBER 27: *The Tiger 3 on 3 Fall Brawl will be Saturday, October 27 at 9 a.m. at DCHS, DeKalb Middle School, and Northside Elementary School. The cost to participate is $120 per team (minimum 4 and maximum 5 player teams). Guaranteed three games. Certified referees for bracket play. A t-shirt for each player on a team. Medals for division champions. Male and Female Divisions. Division 1- Grades 4th and 5th. Division 2-Grades 6th-8th. Division 3- Grades 9th & 10th. Division 4- 11th & 12th. Division 5-Open. OCTOBER 31:* Parents, children, and local businesses are invited to join the City of Smithville and the Police Department’s “Trick or Treat Halloween Downtown” Wednesday, October 31 from noon until 5:00 p.m. Some offices in the DeKalb County Courthouse, Smithville City Hall, Smithville Police Department, Justin Potter Library, and participating businesses downtown will have candy and special treats for the children. Look for the stores and offices with a picture of an orange pumpkin on their windows. Maps will soon be available at the police department and Justin Potter Library to show parents which businesses will be taking part in the event. This event is sponsored by the Smithville Police Department and the Smithville City Hall. First, second, and third place winners will be presented a “Halloween on the Square Best Costume Award”, media recognition, and bragging rights. The Smithville Volunteer Fire Department will have special treats for children Wednesday, October 31 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Stop by for candy and a tour of the Smithville Fire Hall and the fire trucks. Meet with Smithville Fire Chief Charlie Parker and the Smithville Fire Department Volunteers.

NOVEMBER 1: *The 1st DeKalb Chair Volley Ball Tournament is scheduled for November 3rd!  This tournament can only be made up of teams of 6 that have a cause! It can be non- profit clubs, school Clubs, churches, Youth groups, charities, teachers who need supplies for their classroom! It’s FREE to enter and the winning team wins $500 to their cause! This will be a great way to get the community involved! Entry form can be picked up at DeKalb Community Complex and must be turned in by October 20th! Call 615-597-2121 for more information.

NOVEMBER 8 :*Liberty State Bank will be having their 13th Annual Veterans Breakfast Thursday November 8th 2018. The breakfast will be at the West Main Baptist Church Fellowship Building in Alexandria. We will begin serving at 7:30am. We look forward to seeing all of our Veterans!
