A 50 year old McMinnville man was airlifted after a near head-on crash Thursday on Highway 56 south near Evins Mill Nursery.

Homer Sharp was flown by a helicopter ambulance to Vanderbilt Hospital.

According to Trooper William Jackson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Sharp was traveling south on Highway 56 in a red BMW when his car was struck by a 2004 Chevy Colorado pickup truck driven by 31 year old Victor Santos of Smithville.

Santos was traveling north on Highway 56 when a car stopped in front of him to make a turn. Santos slowed to avoid a collision with the car and then swerved to the left but crossed into the lane of Sharp.

Santos had minor injuries and was taken by family members to Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital. The helicopter ambulance landed near the scene to fly out Sharp.

Santos was cited for failure to exercise due care.

Members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department, Sheriff’s Department, and EMS were also on the scene.
