Burton Airlifted After Crash on Short Mountain Highway

A 29 year old Smithville woman was airlifted this morning (Tuesday) after her car crashed into a tree on Short Mountain Highway.

According to Trooper Bobby Johnson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tierra Burton was traveling north in a 2004 Mazda 3 when she failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the left side of the roadway. The car struck a fence, road sign, and a large tree. The engine of the car dislodged upon impact. Burton was entrapped and had to be helped from the car by members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department’s Extrication and Rescue Team and DeKalb EMS. She was transported from the scene by ambulance to a helicopter landing zone setup nearby and was flown to Skyline Medical Center.

Members of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department were also on site. Traffic was backed up during the crash investigation.
