11's & 12's to play for District title

The DeKalb County 11-12 year old Little League All-Stars routed Lafayette, 14-6, Monday night in Sparta, and will play Smith County for the District Tournament championship and a berth to the Little League State Tournament in Pulaski. DeKalb must beat Smith twice, however, as it is a
double-elimination tournament and the local team has already lost one game, while Smith is undefeated in District play.

Steven Page hit a grand slam in Monday night's win, while Braxton Howell added a three-run homer. Jalon Foster pitched five strong innings to earn the win on the mound. Foster struck out eight Lafayette hitters.

DeKalb County will play Smith County, Tuesday night, at 7:00 p.m. in Sparta. She the local 11's & 12's win that game, a second and deciding game would be played Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.

Patterson's walk-off homer leads 11's & 12's past Sparta

Aaron Patterson hit a two-out walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Monday night in Sparta, and propelled the DeKalb County 11-12 year-old Little League All-Stars to a 9-7 victory over Sparta in pool play action.

Patterson entered the game as a pitch hitter with a runner on base and two outs on the board. The shot landed just over the left field fence and capped off a comeback for the local team.

Sparta jumped on top with a run in the top of the first inning, but DeKalb answered on Cody Harrell's RBI single in the bottom of the second. Sparta took a 2-1 lead with another run in the third, but Devin Summers tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. Another RBI base hit gave the hosts a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but Jalon Foster hit a two-run home run off the scoreboard to give DC their first lead, at 5-3.

DC 9-10 All-Stars still looking for first win

The DeKalb 9-10 year-old Minor League All-Stars lost to host, Sparta, 7-0, Monday night to drop to 0-2 in pool play at the Area Tournament. The local team was held hitless through the six inning game on Monday.

Sparta plated three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning off DC starting pitcher, A.J. Mooneyham, then added another run in the third and three more in the fifth inning. DeKalb County put five base runners aboard, but only one got as far as second base.

Mooneyham gave up all seven Sparta runs on eight hits and struck out four hitters.

The loss came two days after the local 9's and 10's were held scoreless on four hits in a 4-0 loss to Smith County on Saturday night. Austin Brown, Sam McMillen, John Roller and Charlie Young accounted for the four hits in Saturday's game, while Roller took the loss on the mound.

Little League All-Star teams announced

DeKalb County's 2008 Little League All-Star teams and season award winners were announced during a special ceremony, Tuesday night, at the Little League Field.

Kalab Ferrell received the Carter Braswell Most Valuable Player award for the Little League division, while Matthew Judkins and Matthew Giles each won the award in Minor League and Senior League, respectively. Braxton Howell won the Josh Reece Memorial Gold Glove award in Little League, while Jacob Self won it in the Minor League division. Daniel Stanley won the Josh Reece award in Senior League.

DeKalb Little League All-Star Tournaments to Begin June 28th

DeKalb County's Little League All-Star teams will open play in the upcoming tournaments on Saturday, June 28th. Two local teams will begin play on that day, with five others slated to open tournament play on Monday, July 7th.

The 9-10 year-old Minor League All-Stars will open pool play in the Area Tournament in Sparta on June 28th. The schedule for that tournament is as follows:

Saturday, June 28th
DeKalb Co. vs. Smith Co. - 6 p.m.
Gallatin vs. Sparta - 7:30 p.m.

Monday, June 30th
DeKalb Co. vs. Sparta - 6 p.m.
Gallatin vs. Lebanon - 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, July 1st
DeKalb Co. vs. Gallatin - 6 p.m.
Smith Co. vs. Lebanon - 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, July 3rd
Sparta vs. Lebanon - 6 p.m.
Smith Co. vs. Gallatin - 7:30 p.m.

The winners in pool play will advance on to the District Tournament, which will begin Saturday, July 5th, in Sparta.

Webb's Pharmacy Wins Little League Title With Perfect Record

Webb's Pharmacy shut out Aqua Jet, 14-0, Monday night, and won the 2008 DeKalb County Little League baseball championship. The win gave Webb's an 8-0 record in the second half, and a perfect 16-0 mark for the season, as they also won the first half title.

Steven Page pitched four innings of no-hit ball against Aqua Jet and struck out 11 batters. Webb's put up seven runs in the second inning, and Devin Summers highlighted another seven-run inning in the third with a grand slam home run.

Rice's Tigers closed out the Little League season on Tuesday, with a 15-4 win over Besheare's Landscaping.

Meanwhile, Bumper's Drive-In shut out Love-Cantrell, 6-0, Tuesday night, to win the second half Minor League crown. Bumper's finished the half with a 6-2 record. Johnson's Chiropractic won the first half with a 5-3 record. Jacob Self pitched the complete game shut out for Bumper's to earnthe win.

Tigerettes bow out to Unicoi County at State

The run at the State Tournament ended for the DeKalb County Tigerette fast-pitch softball team, Thursday, as they lost to the Unicoi County Lady Blue Devils, 7-1, in an elimination game. Despite the loss, the Tigerettes ended up fifth out of the eight team field at State, and finished tied for the second most wins in the program's history, with 28.

Unicoi County had 14 hits against Tigerette pitching and put a total of 20 runners on base in the game. Shay Sullivan started the game in the pitcher's circle for DeKalb County, but lasted only two innings. Sullivan gave up three earned runs on seven hits, struck out one, walked three and hit two batters before being relieved by Morgan Page in the top of the third inning. Page pitched the last five innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits, struck out one and walked three.

Tigerettes stave off elimination from State

The DeKalb County High School Tigerette fast-pitch softball team stayed alive in the Class AA State Softball Tournament in Murfreesboro, Wednesday, with a 6-0 shutout victory over Waverly Central. The win moves the Tigerettes into another elimination game on Thursday morning against Unicoi County, who dropped a 3-0 decision to Goodpasture, Wednesday evening.

The Tigerettes took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Cynthia Woodward knocked in Shay Sullivan with an RBI single, then scored, herself, on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Page to left field.
