DeKalb dumped by Upperman in district opener

The Upperman Bees and Lady Bees came to Smithville, Tuesday night, and blistered the DeKalb County High School basketball teams in their district openers. The Lady Bees shook off a slow start, and thumped the Lady Tigers, 73-24, while the Bees blew open the boys' game in the second half, and blew out the Tigers, 72-48.

The Lady Tigers played toe-to-toe with Upperman for most of the first period, and the DC girls rallied from an early deficit to tie the game at 8-8, late in the period. The Lady Bees closed out the period on a 5-1 run, to take a 13-9 lead. The game would not get any closer, however, as Upperman out-scored DeKalb, 29-8, in the secon period. The Lady Tigers would not connect on another field goal until the final 1:08 of the fourth period, and Upperman cruised to victory.

White County sweeps border match-ups

December 1, 2007

The White County Warriors and Warriorettes came to Smithville, Saturday night, and swept a pair of games from the DeKalb County High School basketball teams. The Warriorettes tamed the Lady Tigers, 50-23, while the Warriors out-scored the Tigers, 82-75. White County did not trail at any point in either game.

In the girls' game, the Warriorettes led 16-5 at the end of the first period, and 26-9 at the half. The Lady Tigers struggled from the floor, managing only four first half field goals. White County upped their lead to 38-17 at the end of the third period, before out-scoring DC 12-6 in the final period.

Katie Herman scored 12 points to lead the Lady Tigers, while Victoria Bennett added four. Morgan Page, Nikki Bass and Mackenzi Gibson each tallied two points, while Martha Webb chipped in a free throw. Lacy Yslas led White County and all scorers with 15 points.

Tigers, Lady Tigers upend visiting Gordonsville

The DeKalb County High School Lady Tiger basketball team more than doubled their first three period output in the fourth and final period, and rallied to a 43-37 victory over the Gordonsville Tigerettes, Friday night in Smithville. The Lady Tigers, who led for most of the first half, came back from a five-point third period deficit to win their first game of the season.

The Lady Tigers led for all but the final 32.6 seconds of the first half, when a Jana Watson three-pointer gave Gordonsville a 13-12 lead, which they held through the intermission. The lead extended to 20-15 in the third period, but DeKalb County tied the game with a 5-0 run. Gordonsville scored the last three points of the period, and led 23-20 going into the final period.

Tigers rout Pioneers; fourth quarter costs Lady Tigers

The DeKalb County High School Tiger basketball team routed the Warren County Pioneers, 64-48, in the home opener Tuesday night in Smithville, while the Lady Tigers watched a one-point lead entering the fourth period evaporate in a 54-38 loss.

The Lady Tigers battled back and forth with the Lady Pioneers for most of three periods before the fourth period collapse. DeKalb led, 12-11, at the end of the first, then extended their lead to four points late in the second period. Warren County closed out the second on an 8-3 run, however, and led 24-23 at the half.

Down 30-25 in the final minutes of the third, the Lady Tigers went on a 6-0 run to close out the period, and led 31-30 at the end of three. The Lady Pioneers scored the first ten points of the fourth period, and took advantage of a tired Lady tiger line-up for a 24-7 final period advantage.

Station Camp deals DCHS two more Hall of Fame defeats

DeKalb County traveled to Station Camp, Saturday night, for a second set of Hall of Fame games, but again, came out on the short end of the scoreboard. The Lady Tigers gave the reigning District 8-AA champs a battle, most of the way, before dropping a 50-39 decision. The Tigers, meanwhile, trailed from the opening tip to the final horn, and lost a 70-48 contest to the Bison, the team that ended the DeKalb boys' season last winter.

The Lady Tigers bounced back from an early 4-0 deficit to tie the game at 11-11 at the end of the first period. DeKalb County took the lead on a Cynthia Woodward three-pointer, with 6:35 left in the second period, and extended the lead to 16-12, with 5:20 left in the half. The Lady Bison battled back, however, and closed out the half on a 12-3 run, which gave the hosts a 24-19 lead at the half.

DCHS basketball swept in season openers

The DeKalb County High School Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball teams were swept at Van Buren County, Tuesday night, in their first games of the regular season.

The Lady Tigers were dealt a 73-48 setback in head coach Mike Shockley's debut, while the Tigers couldn't rebound from an 11-0 Van Buren run to start the boys' game, in a 76-66 defeat.

The games were played as part of the Hall of Fame Classic games, which are games that can either count as regular season games or pre-season games. Coaches have the option whether or not to count the games on their win-loss record.

The DC girls hung tough with the Eaglettes early on, but by the latter moments of the first period, Van Buren had a ten-point lead. It was 17-9 at the end of the first period, and the hosts held a 37-20 advantage at the half. DeKalb County trailed 50-31 going into the final period.

Tiger football seniors go out winners

November 2, 2007

The DeKalb County High School Tiger football team sent 15 seniors out on a winning note, Friday night, as they upended the Macon County Tigers, 33-23, in the last game of the 2007 football season.

The Tigers opened up a 13-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of Hunter Poteete touchdown passes. The sophomore hit Abram Edwards on a 30-yard scoring strike, then found J.J. Herriott on a 63-yard pass. Macon County sacked Poteete in the end zone, early in the second quarter, to get on the board. Kyle Grace's seven-yard touchdown pass to Brian Trask on fourth-and-goal, midway through the second quarter, cut the DC lead to 13-10. DeKalb came back with a six-yard scoring run by Corey Cripps, but Grace scored on a 20-yard touchdown run, making it a 19-17 DeKalb County advantage with just under two minutes left in the half.

Sullivan, Denman earn DCHS Golf MVP awards

Junior, Shay Sullivan, and sophomore, Payne Denman, earned the 2007 DCHS Golf Most Valuable Player awards at Thursday night's golf banquet, held at the Smithville Church of Christ Annex.

Sullivan posted an individual match record of 21-3-3, this season, won the District Tournament, as an individual, for the second season in a row, and won the Region Tournament. She earned a berth to the TSSAA State Golf Tournament for the second straight year, where she tied for 23rd place . Sullivan helped lead the Lady Tiger golf team to a 22-17-1 overall recoed, and to their fourth straight District Tournament title. The Lady Tigers finished third in the Region Tournament.
