Tiger soccer team routs Smith County 16-1

The DeKalb County High School Soccer Tigers posted eight goals in each half against district foe, Smith County, and fell just one goal shy of a program record for goals in a match, as they crushed the Owls, 16-1, Tuesday in Smithville.

The Tigers scored two goals within the game's first two minutes, and added a third before the ten minute mark. By the 18th minute, DC had a 4-0 advantage. Ryan Leiser and Zach Wilbur posted the game's first two goals, while Juan Ruiz and Brandon Puckett knocked in the next two. Ruiz accounted for his second goal, which made it a 5-0 game, and Leiser's second goal at the 33rd minute of the half, extended the lead to 6-0. Travis Menix and Jesus Rivera each added goals in the final two minutes of the half, which gave the Tigers an 8-0 lead at the intermission.

Tigerettes split DH with White County

April 1, 2008

After a seven-day layoff, the DeKalb County Tigerette fast-pitch softball team returned to action, Monday afternoon, against visiting White County. The Tigerettes got five strong innings from Shay Sullivan in the pitcher's circle, and an RBI double by Jaylen Garrett, which was the difference in a 1-0 Tigerette victory in the first game. The second game, however, was taken by the visiting Warriorettes, 6-4, despite a valiant rally attempt by DeKalb County.

Sullivan allowed only two hits in five innings in game one, and struck out seven White County batters. The Tigerettes had only three hits in the game, but two of those came in the bottom of the third inning, when DeKalb County scored the game's only run. Kayla Fish led off the inning with a single, and Garrett came up moments later and scored Fish with a hard hit double to center field. The Tigerettes committed no errors in the opener.

TSSAA Athletic Academic Awards Ceremony Held at DCHS

Outstanding student-athletes from DeKalb County High School were recognized in a ceremony in front of the entire student body, Monday morning, at the school. The TSSAA Athletic Academic awards were handed out to both individual student athletes and their respective programs, which recognized outstanding performance in the classroom, in addition to their participation in high school athletics.

Nine DCHS athletic programs were honored with the Distinguished Scholastic Achievement Team Award, which recognized teams with a collective grade-point average between 3.25 and 4.0. They included: Lady Tiger golf (team GPA: 3.75); DCHS basketball cheerleaders (3.71); Tiger golf (3.65); Lady Tiger basketball (3.65); Tiger tennis (3.6); Tigerette softball (3.56); Lady Tiger tennis (3.45); Tiger basketball (3.43); DCHS football cheerleaders (3.38).

Tigers swept by Upperman

The Upperman Bees edged the DeKalb County Tiger baseball team, 7-6, Tuesday in Baxter to complete a regular season district sweep. Upperman topped the Tigers, 4-1, Monday in Smithville.

DeKalb County took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Bees gained the edge with a two-run third inning. The Tigers erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth inning to open up a 6-2 lead. Upperman battled back, however, with a run in the bottom of the fifth, two more runs in the sixth, and claimed the win by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.

Bees hand Tigers first loss of the season

The Upperman Bees scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning, which broke a 1-1 tie, and propelled the visitors to a 4-1 district victory over the host, DeKalb County Tigers, Monday night in Smithville.

The Tigers held the game's first lead, as Cody Atnip drove in a run in the bottom of the third inning on a fielder's choice that plated John Malone. Upperman answered with a run in top of the fourth on an RBI double by Brandon Madewell. The Bees then scratched three runs off Tiger starter, Trey Finley, in the fifth, fueled by Johnny Miller's RBI double. The Tigers out-hit the Bees, 5 to 4, but were unable to put any more runs on the board in the last three innings.

Tigerettes double up Warren County, 6-3

March 24, 2008

The DeKalb County High School Tigerette fast-pitch softball team doubled up border foe, Warren County, 6-3, Monday night in McMinnville.

The Tigerettes pounded out 14 hits, but had to rally for the victory. After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, DeKalb County watched Warren County answer with a run in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second. The Tigerettes pulled to within a run, at 3-2, by tacking on a run in the top of the fourth inning. DeKalb County claimed the lead for good with a three-spot in the top of the fifth inning, and the Tigerettes closed out the scoring with an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Morgan Page started in the pitcher's circle, and worked the first four innings. She allowed three runs on four hits, struck out three and walked three. Shay Sullivan came in and pitched the final three innings, and allowed no runs on two hits, struck out two and walked none.
