Softball Awards Held At Bill Page Ball Field

The girls' summer league softball awards ceremony was held Tuesday night at the Bill Page Ball Field.

The Bill Page Sportsmanship Award was given to the TN Barn Builders/SCB Enterprises team. In Memory Awards, including the Jackie Daniels Award, went to Lindsey Taylor, while the Danny Judkins Award went to Josie Culwell.

Slow-pitch team awards went to the following teams:

Baby Dolls Division - First Place: Liberty State Bank; Second Place (Tied): DeKalb Community Bank, Allison's All-Stars, Turner's Auto Parts; Third Place: Neo's Restaurant

Junior Dolls Division - First Place: Steven's Painting; Second Place (Tied): American Mixed Martial Arts, Ashburn's Alley Kats; Third Place: Pokey's Bail Bonds

Senior Dolls Division - First Place: F.Z. Webb's Pharmacy; Second Place: A-Plus Heating & Air; Third Place: TN Barn Builderss/SCB Enterprises

DCHS Golf teams compete at BRAC Invitational

The DeKalb County High School golf teams participated in the BRAC Invitational Tournament in McMInnville on Tuesday. The Tigers finished fifth out of 13 teams, as they shot a 325 for the 18-hole event. Payne Denman shot a 74 to lead the Tigers, followed by Austin Garrett with a 75, Grant James with an 83 and Logan Clark with a 93.

The Lady Tigers, meanwhile, finished with a team score of 187, which was good enough for eighth place out of 11 teams. Shay Sullivan finished as the low medalist for the tournament, as she shot a 78, while Kalli Mitchell posted a 108.

The Tigers are now 20-15 in match play this season, while the Lady Tigers are 6-17 overall. DeKalb County wil play Jackson County on Monday, September 8th, at Cumberland Golf Course. Tee time is 3:30 p.m.

Saints edge Owls on 8th Grade Night

Ethan Roller tossed a four-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Howell with 57.7 seconds remaining in regulation, Tuesday night, as the DeKalb Saints rallied past the Smith County Owls, 16-14, in their final home game of the regular season. The team's eighth grade members were honored in a pre-game ceremony at VanHooser Stadium.

After tossing the game-tying score, Roller squeezed into the end zone on a busted two-point conversion play to give the Saints the lead. The DMS defense rose to the occasion on the ensuing Smith County drive, and ensured victory by stopping the drive after the Owls lost seven yards in four plays.

DeKalb took the first lead of the game, as they capped off their first drive with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Roller to Sonny Young. Roller then found Will Molander on the two-point conversion, which gave the Saints an 8-0 lead with 26.6 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

Tigers end Watertown drought with 31-14 romp

The DeKalb County High School Tiger football team improved their record to 2-0 on the young season by beating the Watertown Purple Tigers, 31-14, Friday night in Watertown. The win snapped Watertown's six-game win streak over DeKalb County, and was the Tigers' first victory in Watertown since 1974.

Tiger quarterback, Hunter Poteete, threw for 258 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but had a couple of early interceptions, including one by Blaze Eaton that was returned 26 yards for a touchdown. Ryan Huffman's extra point gave the Purple Tigers a 7-0 advantage with 6:20 on the clock in the first quarter.

Tiger golfers post two more match wins

The DeKalb County High School Tiger golf team picked up two more match victories, Thursday at RiverWatch. The Tigers shot a 157 for the afternoon, which was 16 strokes better than White County, who posted a 173. Smith County finished third with a 209.

Payne Denman shot a career-best 29, which is the lowest recorded score of Chris Vance's coaching tenure at DCHS. Austin Garrett shot a 40, while Grant James and Logan Clark each tallied a 44.

Meanwhile, the Lady Tiger golfers shot a 100 for the afternoon and fell four strokes short of White County, who posted a 96. Shay Sullivan shot a 42 for the DC girls, while Kalli Mitchell shot a 58.

The Tiger golf team is now 12-11 in match play this season, while the Lady Tigers are 3-10. The DCHS golfers will take part in the BRAC Invitational at the McMinnville Country Club, next Tuesday.

Saints steamroll Lions at Homecoming

The DeKalb Middle School Saints put up 318 yards of total offense, and blew out the Cannon County Lions, 42-6, Thursday night, during Homecoming festivities. The win improves the Saints' record to 2-1 on the young season.

Zaxtin Fayete rushed for 48 yards and two touchdowns, while Casey France tallied 107 ground yards and another score, as DMS opened up a 22-0 lead and never looked back. Fayette posted the first Saints' touchdown on a four-yard run, then came back with the second score on a 27-yard run. France broke free on a 10-yard run to the end zone for the third DMS touchdown.

Cannon County's only score came on a 55-yard run from scrimmage by Jarrett Melton, which cut the score to 22-6, but the Saints tacked on another touchdown on a 45-yard pass from Ethan Roller to Jason Judkins, with 1:54 left until halftime.

WJLE's Fearless Forecasters Returns

The college football season is back and so are the Fearless Forecasters.

After taking a couple of year's off, these pigskin prognosticators will return for another exciting season of football forecasting.

The program debuts today (Thursday) 4:30 p.m. featuring panelists Joe Goodwin, sponsored by Liberty State Bank, Chad Kirby of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home, Ricky Atnip of the Charles D. Atnip Realty and Auction Company, John Pryor, sponsored by Bradley Printing, Dewain Hendrixson of DeKalb County Ace Hardware, Jeff James of Cumberland Insurance, Roger Underhill of Middle Tennessee Natural Gas, and the host of the program, WJLE's Tom Duggin. Pizza Hut is also a sponsor.

Tigers Open Season with 42-25 Win Over Warren County

The DeKalb County Tigers opened the football season with an impressive 42 to 25 win over border rival Warren County Friday night in Smithville. It was the Tigers' first win in a season opener since the 2004 season, and the team's first win in their four-game series with the Pioneers.

Junior quarterback, Hunter Poteete, threw for 220 yards and four touchdowns, while the Tiger defense logged six sacks and forced three Warren County turnovers. Poteete got DeKalb County on the board with a seven-yard rushing touchdown to cap off the game's opening drive. The Tigers went up 7 to nothing and never trailed throughout the game.

J.J. Herriott put up the next Tiger score, as he ran in from five yards out, with 5:40 left in the first quarter. Freshman kicker, Zach Taylor, nailed DC's first PAT attempt, but had his second one come up short as the Tigers took a 13 to 0 lead.

DC golf teams win again at RiverWatch

The DeKalb County High School golf teams scored match victories over Upperman and Cannon County, Thursday afternoon, at RiverWatch.

The Tigers shot a 168, which was 13 strokes better than Cannon County, who posted a 181 for the afternoon. Upperman finished the day in third place with a 192. Payne Denman shot a 34 to lead the DC boys, followed by Austin Garrett with a 40, Grant James with a 45 and Keith Ferrell with a 49.

The Lady Tigers, meanwhile, shot a 92 to beat the Upperman Lady Bees, who tallied a team score of 121. Cannon County did not field a full girls team. Shay Sullivan shot a 38 to lead DeKalb County, while Kalli Mitchell posted a 54.

The Tiger golf team is now 10-11 on the season, while the Lady Tigers improve to 3-9. The DCHS golf teams will next be in action on Monday at Hidden Valley Golf Course, as they take on Pickett County and Livingston Academy.

DCHS Golf teams top Jackson Co. & Clay Co.

The DeKalb County High School golf teams took match victories over Jackson County and Clay County, Tuesday, at RiverWatch.

The Tigers shot a 156, which was seven strokes better than the Blue Devils, who finished with a 163. Clay County came in with a 223. Payne Denman shot a 36 to lead the Tigers, while Austin Garrett tallied a 38. Grant James was next with a 39, followed by Logan Clark with a 43.

The Lady Tigers, meanwhile, shot an 89 to knock off the Lady Blue Devils, who shot a 120 for the afternoon. Clay County did not field a girls team. Shay Sullivan scored a 38 for the DC girls, while Kalli Mitchell tallied a 51.
