The DeKalb County Tigers won another thriller Friday night as they held off the Smith County Owls 34 to 32 at Carthage to improve their record to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the region.
Tiger Quarterback Steven Jennings was injured in the 3rd period and was sidelined for the rest of the game. Tyler Cantrell came in at Quarterback and led the Tigers to the win.
Smith County took advantage of a Tiger turnover on the opening kick-off and scored on a 7 yard touchdown run by Shermar King. The PAT was good and the Owls led 7-0 with 9:54 left in the 1st period.
The Tigers tied the game with 7:52 left in the 1st period on a 38 yard touchdown run by Quarterback Steven Jennings. Matthew Poss connected on the PAT and the score was 7-7.
The Owls jumped out front again with 4:09 left in the 1st period on a 4 yard touchdown run by Shermar King. The PAT attempt failed but Smith County led 13-7.
DeKalb County drove deep into Owl territory on their next possession but another turnover gave Smith County the ball on their 14 yard line. On the next play Quarterback Carson Hackett found Campbell Gregory on a pass play that covered 86 yards for a score. Again the PAT try failed but the Owls built a 19-7 lead with 33 seconds left in the 1st period.
DeKalb County cut the Owl advantage with 7:52 left in the 2nd period on a 1 yard touchdown run by Nick May. The PAT attempt by Matthew Poss was no good but the Tigers were within a touchdown of taking the lead trailing 19-13.
On the Owls’ next possession, Bradley Miller for the Tigers picked off a Carson Hackett pass. DeKalb County then scored on the following play as Steven Jennings connected with Isaiah Jones on a pass that went for 61 yards and a touchdown. Matthew Poss added the extra point and DeKalb County regained the lead 20-19 with 6:43 left in the 2nd period.
Smith County got the ball to start the 3rd period and quickly moved down field to score. John Ross Hord took it in on a 5 yard touchdown run. The PAT was good and the Owls went back out front 26-20 with 11:20 left in the quarter.
Jennings exited the game with an injury on the ensuing Tiger possession, but Tyler Cantrell came in at quarterback and led DeKalb County to another score. Tyler Bundy capped the drive on a 4 yard touchdown run. Matthew Poss booted the extra point and the Tigers retook the lead 27-26 with 5:18 left in the 3rd period.
Quarterback Tyler Cantrell gave the Tigers some breathing room with 4:57 left in the 4th period as he scored on a 22 yard touchdown run. Matthew Poss added the PAT to extend the DeKalb County lead to 34-26.
The Owls scored their last touchdown of the game with 4:37 left on a 30 yard touchdown pass from Carson Hackett to Shermar King. The try for the 2 point conversion failed and DeKalb County held on to win 34-32.
DeKalb County will travel to Macon County next Friday night, September 23. Kick-Off is set for 7:00 p.m. WJLE will have LIVE coverage.
