The DeKalb County Tigers opened the 2016 season Friday night with a 27-7 victory over their border rivals from Warren County in Smithville.
The Tigers scored on their opening drive of the game covering 85 yards in six plays. Matthew Poss caught a 4 yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Steven Jennings. Poss added the extra point to give DeKalb County a 7-0 lead with 9:44 left in the 1st period.
After exchanging punts, the Tigers thwarted a 4th down play by Warren County later in the 1st period and took over at the Pioneers 46 yard line. DeKalb County later got a field goal on the strength of a 25 yard kick by Matthew Poss with 43 seconds to go in the quarter to give the Tigers a 10-0 lead.
Matthew Poss got the Tigers on the board again with 2:10 left in the 2nd period on a 15 yard touchdown catch from Quarterback Steven Jennings. Poss added the extra point and DeKalb County led 17-0. That was the half time score.
Warren County scored their only touchdown of the game on a 10 yard run by Raleigh Woods with 7:35 to go in the 3rd period. The extra point was good and the Pioneers trailed 17-7.
DeKalb County’s Tyler Bundy extended the Tiger lead with 11:49 left in the 4th period on a 24 yard touchdown run. Poss added the extra point and score was 24-7.
The Tigers’ final points of the game came on a 42 yard field goal by Matthew Poss with 6:16 left in the game.
DeKalb County (1-0) will host Stone Memorial next Friday night, August 26 at 7:00 p.m. in Smithville.
