The DeKalb County High School Tiger baseball team routed the Cannon County Lions, 14-4, in Smithville, Thursday, in the play-in game of the District 7-AA Tournament. With the win, the second-seeded Tigers advanced on to the double-elimination portion of the tournament, which begins Monday in Baxter. The game ended in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the ten-run rule.
The Lions, the number-seven seed, struck first with an unearned run off Tiger starter, Bray Page, in the top of the first inning, but DeKalb County blew the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the first. Joseph Bowen kicked off the scoring with a two-run single, and the Tigers totaled five hits in the inning. Trey Finley earned an RBI, as he was walked with the bases loaded, and Destry Wiggins added another big hit with a two-run double.
DeKalb County plated two more runs in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Wiggins, who scored himself on a throwing error, two batters later.
The Lions finally broke through with three runs off Page in the top of the sixth inning, and trimmed the DC advantage to 10-4. DeKalb stormed back, however, with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game. Corey Atnip started the attack with a two-run single, followed by RBI singled from Colt Stewart and John Malone. Malone's hit drove in Stewart and the winning run.
Page pitched all six innings, and allowed the four runs, three earned, on six hits, struck out eight, walked three and hit two batters. The Tigers knocked Lion starter, Justin Phillips, out of the game after only two-thirds of an inning. Phillips gave up seven runs on four hits, struck out one and walked three. Austin Walker came in and allowed three more runs on three hits through 2 1/3 innings, while Nick Borren pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and allowed the last four runs on four hits.
Wiggins finished with two singles, a double and three RBI to lead the Tigers at the plate. Corey Atnip had two singles and two RBI, while Stewart had two singles and one RBI. Bowen slugged a two-run single, Finley had a double and an RBI, Malone had an RBI single, while Page had one single.
