The DeKalb County High School basketball teams split a doubleheader with York Institute, Tuesday night in Smithville, in the final home games for the local teams in the regular season. The Lady Tigers lost the opener, 62-44, while the Tigers won the nightcap, 63-56.
The Lady Tigers trailed 15-6 at the end of the opening period, and 33-16 at the half. York extended the lead to 22 points, at 51-29, through three periods, and won the game despite DeKalb County taking a 15-11 advantage in the fourth period.
In the boys' game, the Dragons roared out to a 14-9 lead at the end of the opening period, but the Tigers came back for a 27-25 edge at halftime. DeKalb outscored York, 20-19, in the third, and led, 47-44, at the end of the period. The Tigers claimed a 16-12 advantage in the fourth, and rolled on to the seven-point win.
Payne Denman hit four three-pointers and paced the Tigers with 16 points. Hunter Stewart added 12, while Travis Woodward tallied 10.
The Tigers improve to 12-11 overall on the season, and to 5-6 in the district, while the Lady Tigers drop to 4-19 overall and to 0-11 in district play. DeKalb County will conclude the district portion of their schedule, Friday night at Smith County, then will wrap up the regular season, Saturday night, at Warren County. Friday's games will begin at 6:00 p.m. with Saturday's contests set to tip off at 6:30 p.m. WJLE plans live coverage of both games.
