Tigers top LA, again; clinch second in district

April 29, 2008

The DeKalb County High School Tiger baseball team used an 11-run second inning to blow out the Livingston Academy Wildcats, 13-2, Tuesday night in Smithville. The win came on Senior Night, as it was the last home game of the regular season, and also clinched second place for the Tigers in the final regular season district standings.

DeKalb dodged a bullet in the top of the first inning, as the Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs. Tiger starter, Zack Rowland, struck out LA's Cody Winton, then Lee Gatts hit into an inning-ending double play as the Tigers kept the 'Cats off the board. DC scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a fielder's choice by Bray Page, which brought in Destry Wiggins for the game's first run, and an RBI single by Joseph Bowen.

The second inning, however, was the decisive one for the Tigers, as they sent 16 batters to the plate, scored 11 runs on six hits, drew three walks and one hit batsmen and took advantage of two Livingston errors. Trey Finley swung the big bat in the inning, as the senior smashed a three-run home run to make it a 5-0 game, and came within a couple of feet of hitting a second home run later in the inning. Finley belted a double on the next at bat, which brought another Tiger run in to score. Page also had a single, a double and three RBI in the inning. Colt Stewart and John Malone also drove in a run apiece in the second.

Rowland worked the first four innings for the win, allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out seven Wildcat batters. Cody Atnip came on in the fifth inning and allowed the two Wildcat runs on three hits. Cody Winton took the pitching loss for Livingston, as he gave up nine runs on eight hits and was knocked from the game after just one full inning. Hayden Hill pitched the final four innings, and surrendered four more runs on two hits.

DeKalb County had ten total hits in the game and committed no errors.

The Tigers finish the regular season at 21-5, and 8-4 in the district. DeKalb County will host either York Institute or Cannon County in the District Tournament play-in game, either Thursday or Friday evening. The double-elimination portion of the District Tournament begins Monday in Baxter.
