Tigers, Lady Tigers split at Cannon Classic

The DeKalb County High School basketball teams split their opening night games at the Cannon County Thanksgiving Classic in Woodbury, Friday night. The Lady Tigers dropped their game to the Hickman County Lady Bulldogs, 53-26, while the Tigers salvaged a split in the nightcap with a 79-70 win over the Bulldogs.

Hickman County led the girls' contest, 18-8, at the end of the first period, and used a stingy defensive effort to take a 33-15 leaad at the half. The Lady Tigers managed only three points in the third period, as the Lady Dawgs opened up a 43-18 lead. Hickman County out-scored DeKalb County, 10-8, in the game's final period.

Nine Lady Bulldogs reached the score sheet, led by Kayla Hutcherson, with 12 points, and Jaclyn Wise with 11. Nine Lady Tigers also scored in the game, led by Mercedes Luna, who came off the bench in the fourth period and scored five points. Morgan Page and Nikki Bass scored four points apiece.

The Lady Tigers dropped to 1-2 on the season with the loss.

In the boys' game, the Tigers opened the game with a 23-9 lead at the end of the first period, and led 40-27 at the half. The Bulldogs battled back, however, and pulled to within three points at the end of three periods, at 54-51. Seth willoughby took over the game for DeKalb County in the final period. The junior guard scored eight unanswered points to open the period, which gave the Tigers a 62-51 lead. Hickman County fought back in the fourth, but the Tigers out-scored the Bulldogs, 25-19, in the period, to roll on to the 79-70 win.

Payne Denman led the Tigers with 26 points, while Willoughby added 21, including 16 in the fourth period. Cody Myrick also reached double-figures with 12 points. D.J. Key paced Hickman County with 15 points, while T.J. Lassiter added 13.

The Tigers improve to 2-1 on the season with the win.

DeKalb County will take on Page High School on day two of the Cannon County Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday. The Lady Tigers will battle the Lady Patriots at 1:00 p.m. with the boys' game to follow. WJLE plans live coverage of Saturday's games from Cannon County High School in Woodbury.
