Tigers, Lady Tigers rout Monterey

December 2, 2008

The DeKalb County High School basketball teams took a pair of non-district games with visiting Monterey, Tuesday night in Smithville. The Lady Tigers won the opener, 54-43, while the Tigers rolled in the nightcap, 79-41. Both DCHS teams are now 3-2 on the season.

The Lady Tigers never trailed the Lady Wildcats, as they opened up a 5-0 lead in the game's first few moments, and owned a 16-8 edge at the end of the opening period. The lead grew to a game-high 16 points late in the second period, and DeKalb County owned a 29-15 advantage at the half.

Monterey, however, began chipping away at the Lady Tiger lead in the third, and whittled it down to nine, at 41-32, by the end of the period. A 9-0 Lady Wildcat run from the closing moments of the third on into the fourth period sliced the DC lead to four, at 41-37, with about five and a half minutes to play. DeKalb closed out the game, however, on a 13-6 run, which put away the Lady Wildcats and secured the victory.

Cynthia Woodward led the Lady Tigers with 17 points, while Martha Webb added 15. Britnee Sells scored 19 to pace Monterey.

The Tigers trailed only once in the boys' contest, as Monterey took a 1-0 lead to open the game, but the DC boys reeled off 10 unanswered points before the Wildcats could respond. DeKalb led 20-10 at the end of the first peiod, and 43-25 at the half.

Monterey got no closer than 16 points in the second half, as they opened the third period with a bucket to cut the deficit to 16, but the Tigers went on a 15-4 run to open up a 27-point lead, at 58-31. The Tigers led 58-35 at the end of the third, and cruised to the lopsided victory by out-scoring the Wildcats 21-6 in the final period.

Hunter Poteete led a balanced Tiger stat sheet with 13 points, while Seth Willoughby added 11. 15 different Tigers scored in the game. Michael Buckner led Monterey and all scorers with 18 points.
