Tigers, Lady Tigers end tournaments with losses

The DeKalb County High School basketball teams ended their respective holiday tournament runs with losses on Saturday. The Lady Tigers suffered a 38-31 setback to district foe and tournament host, Macon County, at the Nera White Christmas Tournament in Lafayette, while the Tigers lost to Clinton, TN, 63-54, at the Monticello (KY) Holiday Classic.

The Lady Tigers had a 7-2 lead at the end of the first period against Macon County, but the Tigerettes rallied for a 12-10 lead at the half. A 16-9 Tigerette advantage in the third made it a nine-point game at the end of the period, and Macon County clinched fifth place in the girls' bracket with the seven-point win over DeKalb County.

Cynthia Woodward paced the Lady Tigers with 12 points, while Katie Herman added six. Courtney Clark and Katelyn Gregory each had 14 points to lead Macon County.

The Lady Tigers will enter the new year with a 4-9 overall record for the season.

The Tigers, meanwhile, also held an early lead, as they led Clinton, 16-12, after the first period, and 30-24 at the half. The East Tennessee school rallied int he third, out-scoring the DC boys, 20-14, to tie the game at 44-44. Clinton pulled away in the fourth, as they out-scored the Tigers, 19-10, to roll on to victory.

Travis Woodward had 19 points to lead the Tiger effort, while Payne Denman added nine points on three three-pointers. Chase Thomas led Clinton with 17 points.

The Tigers are now 6-7 overall after losing their three games at Monticello.

DeKalb County will be out of action this week, and will return to the court on Tuesday, January 8th, as they host Macon County. Tip-off will be 6:00 p.m.
