The Goodpasture Lady Cougars, the top-ranked team in the state in Class AA, and a winner of five consecutive State championships, came to Smithville and dealt the DeKalb County Tigerettes a 9-0 setback, Tuesday, in the championship game of the Region 4-AA Tournament. Despite the loss, the Tigerettes' season will continue with a sub-state game scheduled for Friday at either Chattanooga Christian or Hixson.
The Tigerettes held the high-powered Lady Cougars scoreless through the first four innings, but Goodpasture finally broke onto the scoreboard with a three-run fifth inning. A run scored on a DeKalb County throwing error to first, while a second run scored on a passed ball. Lady Cougar pitcher, Devon Schmidt, plated the third run on an RBI single.
Goodpasture blew the game open in the top of the sixth inning, scoring six runs on five hits, while taking advantage of a second DC error. The big blow came when shortstop, Kelsey Cartwright, blasted a grand slam home run, which made it an 8-0 game. Schmidt finalized the scoring with a second RBI single to cap off the inning.
In the pitching circle, Schmidt allowed only two DeKalb County hits - a pair of singles by lead-off hitter, Victoria Bennett - through the seven inning contest. Schmidt struck out 18 hitters, and retired the last 15 she faced. Olivia Norton took the loss for the Tigerettes, as she started and worked the first 4 1/3 innings. She allowed two runs on six hits, struck out none and walked two. Josie Culwell entered for an inning and a third, and gave up seven runs on five hits. Norton came back in for the final inning and a third, and allowed oone more Goodpasture hit.
The Tigerettes drop to 26-9 on the season with the loss, while Goodpasture improves to 38-6.
