The DeKalb County High School Tiger golf team claimed all four top individual medalist honors at Monday's Region Tournament at Cookeville Country Club, and easily won the event to clinch the boys' programs first State Tournament berth since 1994.
Payne Denman shot a 70 to both lead the Tigers and claim top overall individualist medalist honors. Grant Goodwin was next in line with a 73, followed by Grant James with a 75, and Austin Garrett with a 76. Their combined team score of 294 far out-distanced second place Portland, who finished with a 323. Station Camp was third, with a 331.
Meanwhile, the Lady Tiger golf team fell short of their second straight State Tournament bid, although junior, Shay Sullivan, will represent the squad at State. Sullivan shot an 80 to claim top individual medalist honors at the Region Tournament, but the Lady Tigers' team score of 170 was four strokes behind Portland, who won the event with a 166. Livingston Academy finished second, with a 169. Cynthia Woodward lowered her District Tournament score by three strokes, as she finished with a 90 for DeKalb County. Sullivan will represent the Lady Tigers at the State Tournament for the second year in a row.
The Lady Tigers' season ends with an overall record of 22-14-1, while the Tigers prepare for next week's State Tournament, with a mark of 42-22.
