Smith County tops DeKalb 10's & 11's for State berth

July 16, 2008

The DeKalb County 10 and 11 year old All-Stars lost their bid to earn a berth to the State Tournament, Tuesday night, as they traveled to Smith County and lost to the host team, 11-1, in the final game of pool play for both teams. The DeKalb squad finished 3-2 in pool play, while Smith County was a perfect 5-0 against the competition.

Smith County jumped out quickly with three runs in the top of the first inning, aided by Jed Hackett's RBI double and a couple of DeKalb errors which allowed two runs to score. An RBI groundout made it a 4-0 Smith advantage in the top of the second inning, and the score remained the same until the fourth inning.

A roughly 30-minute power outage at the field stopped the game in the top of the fourth. Once play resumed, Smith County picked up right where they left off. Will Reddick and Mason Dillon added RBI singles, as the hosts opened up a 7-0 lead.

DeKalb County put their only run up in the bottom of the fourth, as Ty Curtis smacked a triple to lead off the inning. Curtis raced home on a wild pitch, which trimmed the deficit to 7-1. Lance Ball followed with a single, but Smith County pitcher, Jed Hackett, retired the next three DC hitters.

Smith County scored four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to open up an 11-1 advantage, and DeKalb County was unable to mount a rally in the bottom of the inning. The game ended after five innings by virtue of the ten-run rule.

Lance Ball worked the first three an two-thirds innings on the mound, and allowed four runs on four hits and struck out seven batters. Nick Parsley came on in relief, and allowed seven runs on four hits though the final inning and a third. DeKalb County committed eight errors in the field.

Meanwhile, the DeKalb County 10-and-under Machine-Pitch team rallied from an 11-6 deficit against Smith County in the double-elimination championship tournament in Smith County, but lost a heart-breaker, 16-13, to drop into the loser's bracket. DeKalb tied the game, 11-11, in the fourth inning before the hosts rallied for the win. DeKalb County will play Lebanon, Wednesday night, at 7:30 p.m. in an elimination game at Smith County.
