The DeKalb Middle School Saints stunned the visiting Satterfield Yellow Jackets, 20-16, in Smithville, Tuesday night, which put an end to the program's 17-game, two-plus year losing streak.
The Saints blew a 14-0 first half lead, and had to rally in the fourth quarter to earn the victory. Zaxtin Fayette capped off the first DMS drive with a 23-yard touchdown run. Fayette also added the two-point conversion run, as the Saints opened up an 8-0 lead with 7:04 left in the first quarter.
Will Molander put the Saints on the board, again, after their second drive. Molander raced 43 yards for the second DeKalb touchdown, and the score was 14-0 with 5:25 left in the second quarter after the failed PAT.
The Yellow Jackets answered on the ensuing drive, as fullback Victor Hardwick plowed 57 yards for a score. Tailback Seth Calhoun added the two-point conversion run, which trimmed the Saints' lead to 14-8, with 4:48 left in the half.
DeKalb appeared to have another touchdown just before the intermission, as Molander picked off a Satterfield pass and ran 63 yards to the end zone. Molander, however, was ruled out of bounds at the 21-yard-line, and the half ended with an incomplete pass by Ethan Roller that was deflected at the goal line.
Satterfield took the lead on the opening drive of the second half, as Calhoun capped off a six-play, 58-yard drive with a six-yard run to paydirt. The two-point conversion run gave the visitors a 16-14 lead, with 5:10 remaining in the third quarter.
After a lengthy Yellow Jacket drive stalled in DeKalb territory, the Saints took the ball at their own 23-yard-line, with 4:56 left in the game. Molander raced 41 yards on the first play from scrimmage, and Casey France added a 12-yard gain, moments later. On third-and-five from the 21, Roller dumped a pass into Molander's hands, and the tailback weaved his way 21 yards into the end zone for the go-ahead score. The two-point conversion pass attempt fell short, but DMS had a 20-16 lead, with 2:10 left in regulation.
The Yellow Jackets drove the ball into DeKalb territory on the following drive, but a sack by Gage Brown and Stephen Howell, followed by a near-interception by Howell, set Satterfield up with a fourth down play in the closing seconds. A pass attempt on the fourth down play fell short, and DMS took over the ball and ran out the clock.
The Saints had 208 yard of total offense, including 143 on the ground. Molander ran the ball four times for 80 yards, while Fayette added 32 yards on eight carries. Roller was 3-of-7 through the air for 65 yards and a touchdown.
DeKalb Middle is now 1-1 on the season, as they picked up their first win since the final game of the 2005 season. The Saints will have nine days off, then will welcome Cannon County to Smithville for Homecoming on Thursday, August 28th.
