The DeKalb Middle School Saints, who were held scoreless last week at Smith County in a 36-0 loss, exploded for 52 points Thursday night as they beat the Gordonsville Middle School Tigers 52 to 36 in the home opener in Smithville.
Gordonsville got on the board first with just 20 seconds to go in the first quarter on a 49 yard touchdown pass. The two point conversion was good and Gordonsville led 8-0 by the end of the first quarter.
The Saints answered with 7:37 left in the first half as A. J. Mooneyham scored on a 57 yard touchdown run. The two point conversion was good and the game was tied 8-8.
Gordonsville re-gained the lead with 6:49 left in the first half on a 27 yard touch down run. The two point conversion was good and Gordonsville was on top 16-8.
With 5:03 left in the first half, Jesse VanDyne recovered a Gordonsville fumble and the Saints later capitalized as A.J. Mooneyham scored on a 35 yard touch down run. The conversion was good and the game was tied at 16-16.
The Tigers jumped on top again with 2:22 left in the first half on a 14 yard touch down run. This time the conversion try failed but Gordonsville held a half time lead of 22-16.
The visitors extended their lead with 7:17 left in the 3rd quarter on a 35 yard touch down run. The Tigers made good on the two point conversion and built a two touchdown lead over the Saints at 30-16.
Momentum swung back to the Saints later in the third period as Trenton Nicoson scored on a 74 yard touch down run. The two point conversion try failed but the Saints had cut the Gordonsville lead to 30 to 22
The Saints them tied the game with 1:04 left in the third quarter on a five yard touchdown run by A..J. Mooneyham. The two point conversion was good and the score was 30-30
The home team got back out front with just 7.8 seconds to go in the third period when Quarterback Joey Moon raced to the endzone on a 51 yard touch down run. The two point conversion attempt failed but the Saints led 36-30.
In the fourth quarter, Gordonsville tied the game again. With 6:49 left, the Tigers scored on a 70 yard touch down run. The two point conversion attempt was no good but the score was back even at 36-36.
The rest of the game belonged to the Saints. With 2:52 left, Quarterback Joey Moon scored on a 35 yard touch down run. The two point conversion was good and the Saints led 44-36.
Seconds later the Saints' Ryan Lafever recovered a Gordonsville fumble. A.J. Mooneyham then scored on a 30 yard touch down run with 2:32 left and after the successful two point conversion, Saints went onto win 52-36.
The Saints are 1-1 on the season and 1-1 in their division and will play Macon County in Smithville next Thursday night, September 1 at 6:30 p.m.
