The Stone Memorial Panthers ran over the DeKalb County Tigers 34-7 in Smithville Friday night on the second week of the high school football season.
The Tigers found it difficult to stop the Panthers’ effective running game as all five Stone Memorial touchdowns came on the ground.
On their opening drive, the Panthers marched 79 yards downfield. Ethan Pierce scored on a 2 yard touchdown run. Tyler Breeding added the extra point and the visitors led 7-0 with 8:40 left in the 1st period.
After a Tiger turnover on an interception, the Panthers mounted an 80 yard drive and Cody Wyllins scored on a 1 yard run with 4:21 left in the 1st period. Breeding tacked on the extra point and Stone Memorial led 14-0.
The Panthers took advantage of another Tiger turnover on an interception and scored with 11:26 left in the 2nd period on a 1 yard Blake Hicks touchdown run. The extra point by Breeding gave Stone Memorial a 21-0 advantage.
The Tigers’ only score of the night came on a Tyler Bundy 10 yard touchdown run with 10:27 left in the half, capping an 82 yard drive. Matthew Poss added the extra point and the Tigers trailed 21-7
Cody Wyllins added another touchdown for the Panthers with 8:07 left in the 3rd period. The extra point try was no good but Stone Memorial led 27-7.
The final score of the night came on a Blake Hicks touchdown run with two seconds left in the 3rd period, capping a 73 yard drive. The extra point by Tyler Breeding was good and Stone Memorial went on to win 34-7.
DeKalb County (1-1) will host York Institute (0-2) next Friday night, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. in Smithville.
