The DeKalb County Tigers closed out the regular season at Carthage Friday night losing a close game to the Owls 35-31.
The Tigers, 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the district, will learn later today if they have earned a berth in the state playoffs. The Owls finished the regular season 6-4 and 5-1 in the district.
DeKalb County scored off a Smith County turnover 23 seconds into the game as Dustin Warner picked up an Owl fumble and raced 60 yards for a touchdown. The extra point try by kicker Matthew Poss was blocked but the Tigers led 6-0 with 11:37 left in the first period.
Smith County answered on a 46 yard touchdown run by Jalen Manning. The extra point try by Ryder Denney was good and the Owls grabbed a 7-6 lead in the first period.
Devonta Milan put the Tigers back on top with 7:16 left in the second period on an 18 yard touchdown run. The extra point try by Poss was no good but DeKalb County led 12-7.
With 1:38 left in the second period Caleb Young caught a pass from Jalen Manning for 30 yards and a touchdown. The extra point try by Denney was good and Smith County was back in front 14-12.
DeKalb County got on the board again with 14.8 seconds left in the half on an 80 yard touchdown run by Devonta Milan. The two point conversion attempt was no good but the Tigers led 18-14 at half time.
Smith County took the lead with 11:55 left in the third period on a three yard touchdown run by Jalen Manning. The extra point by Denney was good and the Owls were up 21-18.
Tiger quarterback Steven Jennings threw a 22 yard touchdown pass to Aaron Patterson with 8:13 left in the third period. The extra point attempt was no good but DeKalb County was back in front 24-21.
With 1:12 left in the third period, Jennings scored on a 38 yard touchdown run. The extra point by Matthew Poss was good and DeKalb County led 31-21 heading into the fourth period.
Smith County's Jalen Manning closed the gap in the fourth period, scoring on a one yard touchdown run. The PAT by Denney was good and the Owls trailed 31-28.
After intercepting a Steven Jennings pass, Smith County mounted its last scoring drive from the Tiger 18 yard line with Jalen Manning later taking it into the endzone on a touchdown run. Denney's extra point was good and the Owls led 35-31.
The Tigers threatened to take the lead late in the game. Devonta Milan broke free on a long run down to the Smith County 24 yard line. But the Owls then picked off a Steven Jennings pass to end the threat and the Tigers hopes of pulling off the win.
