The DeKalb County Lady Tigers came close to knocking off the top team in the state in Class AA basketball Friday night but fell just short, losing 47 to 42 to the Upperman Lady Bees in Smithville. The Tigers improved their record with a 56 to 50 win over the Bees
The girls game was close throughout with DC leading 15 to 12 after the first period. Upperman outscored the Lady Tigers 14 to 10 in the second to grab a 26 to 25 halftime lead. The Lady Bees built a four point lead by the end of the third quarter, outscoring DC 14 to 11 in that period. The visitors went on to win 47 to 42, outscoring DC 7 to 6 in the fourth period.
Alex Meadows scored 13 for the Lady Tigers. Chelsea Lewis had 12. Loren Cripps 9. Ashley Barnes 6 and Lydia Foutch with 2.
The Tigers held a lead on Upperman through the boys game, leading 10 to 8 after the first period and 27 to 14 at halftime, outscoring the Bees 17 to 6 in the second quarter. Upperman mounted a comeback attempt in the third period, outscoring the Tigers 19 to 10 but still trailed 37 to 33 after three. DC held off the Bees 19 to 17 in the fourth period and won 56 to 50
Stephen Howell had 19 points for the Tigers. Braxton Howell 11. Braxton Atnip and Lucas Phillips each with 5 and Will Molander and Sonni Young each with 4 points.
The Tigers are now 19-4 overall and 7-2 in the district while the Lady Tigers fall to 10-13 on the season and 1-8 in district play.
DeKalb County will host York Institute Tuesday night, January 31 and travel to Central Magnet on Friday night, February 3. Action starts with the girls games at 6:00 p.m. WJLE will have LIVE coverage.
