DeKalb Suffers First Loss of Season in Shootout with Smith County

The DeKalb County Tigers suffered their first loss of the season Friday night in a shootout with the Smith County Owls at Carthage.

With the 50 to 30 loss, the Tigers go to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in district play.

Smith County drew first blood with 10:29 left in the first period on a 56 yard touchdown run by Quarterback Gage Scurlock. Casey Rushing added the PA.T. and the Owls led 7-0

The Tigers answered with 8:23 left in the first period on a two yard touchdown run by Zach Taylor. The P.A.T. by Taylor was good and the game was tied 7-7.

Cody Puckett gave the Tigers their first lead of the game with 4:14 to go in the first period on a two yard touchdown run. Taylor's P.A.T. was good and DC led 14-7.

The Owls tied the game with 13.5 seconds left in the first period on a 20 yard touchdown run by Jalen Manning. The PA.T. by Rushing was good and the score was 14-14

With 9:39 left in the second period, Cody Puckett put the Tigers back out front on a one yard touchdown run. The P.A.T. by Taylor was good and DC led 21-14.

Smith County's Jamison Stevenson scored on a 37 yard touchdown run with 5:44 left in the second quarter. Rushing's P.A.T. was good and the game was tied at 21-21

The Tigers broke the tie with 5:13 left in the third quarter on the strength of a 25 yard field goal by Zach Taylor. DC led 24-21

Owls' quarterback Gage Scurlock gave his team the lead with 3:39 left in the third quarter on a 19 yard touchdown run. The P.A.T. by Rushing was good and Smith County went back on top 28-24.

The Owls extended their lead with 1:26 left in the third period on a 25 yard touchdown run by Jamison Stevenson. Rushing's P.A.T. was good and Smith County opened up a 35-24 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Tiger quarterback Lucas Phillips, facing a 4th and 17, found Will Molander on a 33 yard touchdown pass play with 8:46 left in the fourth period. The two point conversion attempt failed but DeKalb County had cut the Smith County lead to 35-30.

But the Tigers would get no closer. In fact, the Owls scored twice more, including a 24 yard touchdown run by quarterback Gage Scurlock with 6:20 left in the game. Scurlock then hit Trey Salisbury on a successful two point conversion pass play to give Smith County a 43-30 lead.

The final score came with 3:01 left in the game as Smith County's Jalen Manning broke free on an 82 yard touchdown run. The PA.T. by Rushing was good and the Owls won 50-30
