The DeKalb County 11-12 year old Little League All-Stars topped Smith County, 7-2, in Sparta Wednesday night to win the District Two Tournament title. The victory sends the local All-Star team on to Pulaski, where they will compete in the Little League State Tournament.
Devin Summers scored DeKalb County's first run on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning, and an RBI groundout by Summers in the top of the third inning brought Seth Stanley, followed by Steven Page, who came in to score after the throw home in an attempt to get Stanley sailed over the head of the Smith County catcher and into the back stop. Page picked up DeKalb's first hit of the game just before Summers' RBI groundout, which gave the local team a 3-0 game.
Meanwhile, Page held Smith County to just one hit through the first four innings of the game. The southpaw struck out eight batters before yielding a two-run home run to Smith County's Drew Hamlet in the bottom of the fifth inning That made it a 3-2 lead for DeKalb, and Page was pulled in favor of Braxton Howell, who ended the inning with a strikeout of Grant Williams.
The one-run difference would be as close as Smith County would get, as DeKalb tacked on four more runs in the top of the sixth and final inning. Aaron Patterson smacked a one-out, two run single up the middle to make it a 5-2 game. Jalon Foster opened it up to a 6-2 advantage with an RBI single, and Page drove home Stanley with the final run on an RBI groundut. Howell induced a fly ball to right field to open the bottom of the sixth inning, which Seth Gerringer made a diving catch of, and Howell then struck out the last two Smith County batters to end the game.
The DeKalb County 11-12 year old All-Stars will open play in the State Tournament on Saturday, July 19th, at approximately 12 noon against the champion out of District Four. Win or lose, DeKalb will play again on Sunday, July 20th, in Pulaski. The State Tournament has a double-elimination format.
