Gibbs High School scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning, and blew past the DeKalb County Tigerettes, 9-1, in the first round of the TSSAA Class AA State Softball Tournament in Murfreesboro on Tuesday. The loss moved the Tigerettes into the loser's bracket, where they are scheduled to take on Waverly Central in an elimination game on Wednesday, at approximately 11:30 a.m.
The Lady Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, and scored nine runs on five hits. Tigerette starter, Morgan Page, also walked three batters and hit two more, before leaving the game after only one-third of an inning pitched. Page allowed the first six Lady Eagle runs, and reliever, Shay Sullivan, gave up three more on a three-run triple by Amy Lawrence before the inning was over.
From that point on, Gibbs managed only two more hits and five total base runners, and all were left stranded on base. DeKalb County, meanwhile, left two runners stranded in scoring position in the second inning, and also left runners on base in the first and third innings. The Tigerettes plated their only run in the top of the fifth, as Brittney Armour scored on a fielding error by Gibbs' second baseman, Sadie Tibbs, who bobbled a routime ground ball off the bat of Jaylen Garrett. Kayla Fish was also in scoring position at the time of the error, but was left stranded at third base as Kristina Stephens grounded out to end the inning.
Armour had two of DC's six hits, with a single and a double. Garrett, Fish, Sullivan and Victoria Bennett each had one single.
Sullivan worked the final five and two-thirds innings, and allowed three earned runs on five hits, struck out two, walked three and hit two batters. Danielle Thomas went the full seven innings for Gibbs, and allowed one unearned run on six hits, struck out three and walked none.
The Tigerettes, now 27-10, must beat Waverly on Wednesday to stay alive in the State Tournament. Waverly, 32-13, lost their opening round game to Covington, 12-4. WJLE plans live coverage of the game.
In other Class AA softball results from Tuesday's State Tournament action, Goodpasture shut out Chester County, 8-0, while Unicoi County topped Westview, 9-1. Goodpasture and Unicoi County will play in a winner's bracket semi-final, Wednesday evening, while Gibbs will take on Covington in the other semi. Chester County and Westview will square off at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in the other elimination game.
