Early Voting Begins July 15

Early voting for the August 4 elections begins Friday, July 15 and runs through July 30. Early voting will be conducted on the first floor of the DeKalb County Courthouse. Hours are Mondays 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until Noon. Five elections are set for August 4---the DeKalb County General Election, the Tennessee Republican and Democratic Primaries, and city elections in Smithville, Liberty and Dowelltown.

Tryouts Scheduled for DCHS Golf Team

The DeKalb County High School Golf Team will be having tryouts on Monday, July 11, at the Smithville Golf Course at 1:00 p.m. Anyone interested in
trying out is welcome to come. The golf team will also be hosting the DCHS Golf Team Fund Raiser 4-Person Scramble at Riverwatch Golf Course on
Saturday, July 23, at 12:00 p.m. The entry fee for the tournament is $400 per team, or $100 per person. For that fee, a portion will go to Riverwatch for the greens fee, a portion for prize money, and a portion will go to benefit the DCHS Golf Team.

If you are interested in playing in the tournament or sponsoring a hole, contact John Pryor at 615-464-5756. Also, if you are interested in trying
out for the team but will be unable to play on the July 11 date, you may contact Coach Pryor about setting up an alternate try out date and time at
the aforementioned phone number.

4:30 PM Turkey Talk: Meet at the Camp Store to learn about the Wild Turkey. There will be calls, beards and much more to see! Also we will make our very own Turkey using our handprints! All supplies will be supplied by the park so just come and enjoy.

Friday, July 8th
5:00 PM Natural Art-Rock Painting: Join the Seasonal Ranger at the Camp Store and make a keepsake from your trip to Edgar Evins. We will provide the rocks and paint. All you need to bring is your creativity! Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on.

10:00 AM Sneaky Snakes: Meet Ranger Halfacre at the Interpretive Center for a fun and informative presentation about our local snake species. Afterwards you will get the chance to touch a live snake!

11:00 AM Scavenger Hunt: Meet at the Camp Store to hunt down different things throughout the woods in the campground. Prizes will be given, come have some fun and bring your smarts!

5:30 PM Invasive Species Overtake: Meet at the Camp Store to play a game representing the spread of invasive species. We will talk about what an invasive species is and give some examples. Then get ready to run around!

7:00 PM Fire Pit Building: Meet at the Fire Circle in the campground to learn how to build the ultimate Fire Pit and have the best controlled fires!

8:00 PM S’moreing Around: Come on down to the Fire Circle and make your own s’mores! S’more supplies will be supplied by the park. We will talk about fire safety and even get you thinking about a few riddles.

8:30 PM Scorpion Hunt: Did you know that we have scorpions in Tennessee? Join Ranger Vaughn for a nighttime expedition to find scorpions by black light. Meet at the first Picnic Area at the boat ramp entrance (look for State Parks vehicle).

4:00 PM Slithering Snakes: Meet Ranger Vaughn at the Interpretive Center for a fun and informative presentation about our local snake species. Afterwards you will get the chance to touch a live snake!

Wednesday, July 13th
10:00 AM Water Safety: Meet at the Pool behind the cabins. Come learn basic water safety competence: drowning prevention, how to spot drowning victims, rescue strategies, and why life jackets are important. All participants should bring a life jacket that fits and wear proper clothes for swimming.

Thursday, July 14th
4:00 PM Recycling Importance: Come to the Interpretive Center to learn about the importance of recycling and why it’s so important not to litter.
4:30 PM Natural Recycling: Meet at the Interpretive Center to learn how nature recycles itself and what we can do to help not disturb these natural occurrences.

Friday, July 15th
4:30 PM Trout Talk: Meet at the Interpretive Center to learn about the 3 species of Trout we have in the Caney Fork River and how to identify each species.

5:30 PM Poison Ivy Identification: Come to the Camp Store to learn how to identify poison ivy and the plants that may be confused with it. We will take a short stroll through the campground to test what you have learned.

(Approximately 1 mile) Meet in the parking lot next to the Millennium Trailhead.

7:30 PM Park History Sit: Meet at the Park Office to go up the tower with Ranger Vaughn. We will talk about the history of the park and dam overlooking the Center Hill Dam itself.

DeKalb Schools to Reopen for Registration August 3

DeKalb County Schools will re-open with registration for all students on Wednesday, August 3.

Thursday, August 4 will be an administrative day for teachers only

The first full day of school for all students will be Friday, August 5

A system wide in-service day will be Friday, July 29

All teachers will report to their individual schools on Monday and Tuesday August 1 & 2

UT Extension Agent Cooking Demonstrations

DeKalb County Farmer’s Market

UT Extension Agent April Martin will be doing cooking demonstrations at the DeKalb County Farmer’s Market this summer. Come by for a sample of nutritious recipes using fresh fruits and vegetables. The dates she will be there are: July 16, August 6, and August 13. Collect a recipe card each time. If you collect 3 and bring back you will get a free thermal tote bag.

Monday, July 11: 5:30—8:30 pm for Jams/jellies

Wednesday, July 13: 9:00—12:30 p.m. for Jams/jellies

Monday, July 25: 9:00—12:30 pm for Salsa

Monday, July 25: 5:30—8:30 pm for Salsa

Thursday, July 28: 9:00—12:30 pm for Vegetables

Thursday, July 28: 5:30—8:30 pm for Vegetables

The cost is $20 per course (covers food and supplies). Payment due prior to class at UT Extension, 722 S. Congress Blvd. in Smithville

Classes will be held in the commercial kitchen at the new Community Center across from Food Lion

Open Pantry in Alexandria

As the 3rd Thursday comes after the 3rd Saturday in July, the Open Pantry at the Alexandria United Methodist Church will be held on the 4th Saturday, July 23 between 9 AM and 11 AM. Returning clients please bring back empty boxes. This Open Pantry serves the communities of Alexandria, Brush Creek, Dowelltown, Liberty, and Watertown.
