A support group meeting, for relatives that are caring for relative children, will be held, Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at the Fiddlers Annex, Smithville, TN., from 3:30 – 4:30 pm.

Funds Needed for Upkeep of Jones Cemetery

To anyone who has relatives buried in the Jones Cemetery near Silver Point -- there is a DESPERATE need of funds for mowing and maintenance.
Please send any checks to "Byrd L. Jones Cemetery Fund," C/O Shawn Jacobs, Secretary/Treasurer, 831 Driver Street, Smithvile, TN 37166. The fund is depleted and they can't pay for mowing this summer without some help. Thanks to all who have donated in the past.

Senior Community Service Employment Program

UCHRA would like to invite anyone 55 years or older who meets the eligibility guidelines to be a part of the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). This program provides on-the-job training for older individuals seeking gainful employment in the Upper Cumberland region. This training is twenty hours per week at the current minimum wage with government and non-profit agencies. They provide assessment and testing services to determine your present skill level and for the types of occupations you would like to train. They conduct workshops to teach you the best methods for finding, applying, interviewing, getting, and keeping the right job. They can also refer you to the Tennessee Career Center for basic computer training as well as other employment and training programs. FREE Healthier Eating Program

3-week Healthier Eating Program - Tuesday, May 10, 17 & 24 at 4 pm (Wild Thyme Café); contact Justin Potter Library at 615-597-4359 to reserve a seat.

This back to the basics program will include hands-on food demonstrations, taste testing, and discussion of the recipe’s nutrient content and preparations. Participants will receive a hard copy of the recipes and other educational materials. Recipes and demonstrations will be designed to not only taste good, but be convenient and easy to prepare. They are held in the basement of the DeKalb County Courthouse. The next meeting will be May 31, 2016 @ 12:00pm. If you have an interest in your community and would like to hear more about these organizations and their initiatives, please join us! All are welcome to attend.

FREE High School Equivalency Class Orientation

Ongoing Registration for a FREE High School Equivalency Class Orientation is being held at the new county building at 722 South Congress Boulevard, Smithville.. Enter through the UT Extension/ Motlow College doors. Adult education staff will be available to assist new students in registering and testing weekly as follows:

Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
