The Smithville Mayor and Aldermen will meet Monday, July 7th at 7:00 p.m. at city hall. The agenda includes the appointment of members to the Smithville Electric Board, the Smithville Planning Commission, and Zoning Board, Board of Zoning Appeals, and E911 Board. A report will also be given on the purchase of a John Deere tractor and Diamond side mower. Plus any other business properly brought before the council. WJLE plans LIVE coverage.

Landfill and County Garbage Collection Centers to be Closed July 4th

The DeKalb County Landfill and Garbage Collection Convenience Centers will be closed Friday, July 4th for the Indpendence Day Holiday but will re-open Saturday, July 5th.

DeKalb Fair to Accept Exhibit Entries

The DeKalb County Fair will be accepting exhibit entries on Saturday, July 12 (non-perishable items), 10 - 2 and on Saturday, July 19 (perishable items) 10-2. Entries will be accepted in the Kenneth Sandlin building at the fairgrounds in Alexandria. Please enter through the back door to register and then take exhibits to the appropriate department to be entered. Justin Potter Library Plans Summer Reading Finale Party

The Justin Potter Library Summer Reading Program "Starship Adventure" will end on Friday, July 11th at 2:00 p.m. with a Big Finale party. The day's events will begin with Safari Greg and his Amazing Urban Safari, which includes magic, animals, and much more! The day continues with each child having an opportunity to be interviewed on WJLE. Every child who participated in the summer reading program and completed their reading goal will be awarded a certificate. They will receive a goody bag with free coupons donated by Pizza Hut, the Movie Gallery, and Sonic. All the children in the community are invited to the party so come and join them at the library for an afternoon of fun and surprises.

Fireworks Shows Planned this Weekend on Center Hill Lake

Fireworks Shows will be held at dark Friday, July 4th at Hidden Harbor, Hurricane Dock Resort, and at Cookeville Boat Dock and on Saturday, July 5th at Sligo and Pates Ford Marina.

A money market account has been set up at DeKalb Community Bank in Smithville and Alexandria for friends of Michael Hale who would like to contribute to help pay for his medical bills.
Michael has the “Gillian Berea Virus” and it requires extensive medical treatment and physical therapy. His medical bills are tremendous and he really needs your help.

Bloodmobile Coming to Smithville

DCHS Registration set for Incoming Freshmen and New Students

Incoming freshmen students from DeKalb West and DeKalb Middle Schools and their parents are invited to attend Freshmen Orientation Night on Thursday, July 31 at 6:00 p.m. Students will receive their schedules and attend an orientation session with their home room teachers. Students who attend Freshmen Registration night will not be required to attend school on the regular registration day on August 5th

This Orientation Night is only for Freshmen transferring from DeKalb West and DeKalb Middle Schools.

Students new to DeKalb County are invited to registration during regular school hours July 23rd-25th or call for an appointment with the counselor at 597-4094

Meanwhile all high school students who are new to the DeKalb County School System are invited to come by the DCHS guidance office and register July 23-25th from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

AmVets Blowout for Kids

AmVets Post #101 Ladies Auxiliary will have a 4th of July Blowout for Kids at the Bill Page Ball Park. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. for $5.00. The entry fee includes a hotdog and a drink. Events will be from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Kids, decorate your bikes. A first, second, and third place ribbon will be awarded in each age group. Events include a bean bag toss and bike for ages 2-4; soccer, kick ball, and bike for ages 5-7; and a sack race and bike for ages 8-10. All additional persons: Hot dogs- $1.00 and drinks- $1.00.
